Several Chrome processes in your computer’s process list are normal. Chrome separates its interface, web pages, graphics and other work so a problem in one area is less likely to bring down the whole browser, and sites can be isolated for security. That separation adds some memory overhead, while the total also depends on the pages, extensions and media you have open. To find what is actually using resources, inspect Chrome Task Manager rather than judging by the process count alone.
What Chrome’s processes do
Chrome does not assign exactly one process to every tab. A tab can involve multiple processes, and a renderer may serve more than one tab or extension. Chromium’s RenderingNG architecture documentation describes these roles and notes that grouping can change under memory pressure.
Browser process
The browser process handles Chrome’s interface and coordinates work with renderers and supporting processes. In Google’s Windows troubleshooting guidance, the main process also handles disk and network access and user interactions; in that diagnostic context, it can be identified by the absence of a --type parameter.
Renderer processes
Renderers handle web content and input. A page can use substantial resources for its DOM, JavaScript objects, images, video and other site data. Frames from different sites may be split across processes, while tabs from the same site may be grouped together, particularly under strong memory pressure. So the number of tabs and the number of renderer processes do not have a fixed one-to-one relationship.

GPU and Viz process
Graphics-related work, including compositing, can run separately from page rendering. Chromium says separating Viz helps isolate access to graphics hardware and improve stability if a GPU or driver fails. Graphics-heavy pages or video can make this process relevant when investigating performance.
Utility processes
Chrome also runs specialized supporting work in utility processes. Protected-video decoding is one example in Chromium’s architecture documentation; the exact set depends on the browser and what it is doing.

Why multiple processes can use a lot of memory
The operating system’s total for Chrome includes memory used by its various processes. Open pages, extensions and background tasks have different demands, and pages may retain content such as images, video, graphics resources and JavaScript objects. There is no reliable fixed memory cost per tab that applies across sites and computers.
Process separation supports performance and stability, and it helps isolate sites and browser state. Chrome’s Site Isolation design uses sandboxed renderer processes as a security boundary between sites; the tradeoff can include extra memory overhead. A high process count alone does not show that Chrome is malfunctioning or leaking memory.

Memory footprint is not the same as JavaScript heap
Chrome DevTools distinguishes Memory footprint, which represents memory used at the operating-system level, from JavaScript Memory, which represents the JavaScript heap. The live figure in parentheses is the amount associated with reachable JavaScript objects. These measurements answer different questions, so do not treat them as interchangeable.
A footprint or heap that keeps growing can help narrow an investigation. DevTools author Kayce Basques notes, “There are no hard numbers here, because different devices and browsers have different capabilities.” DevTools describes progressively worsening performance as a possible memory-leak symptom, while consistently poor performance may point to memory bloat; neither pattern is a diagnosis by itself.

How to find the task using memory
- Open Chrome Task Manager. Press Shift+Esc, or select More tools > Task manager from Chrome’s menu.
- Sort by Memory. Inspect the individual tabs, extensions and background tasks near the top. Ending a task can discard unsaved work in it, so close only something you can safely lose.
- Check whether a page or extension is the outlier. If one renderer is unusually active, test the associated page or web app. Disable or remove extensions you do not use, then compare behavior.
- Use your operating system’s tools when needed. On Windows, Task Manager or Process Explorer can help inspect process types and CPU use. Google’s managed-device troubleshooting guidance says low system memory or slow disk access can affect the main process; graphics-intensive pages or a GPU driver can be relevant to the GPU process.
- Escalate intermittent problems cautiously. Google’s managed-device guidance points to browser traces using Perfetto for problems that are difficult to reproduce. Traces may contain sensitive URLs or extension IDs unless privacy filters are enabled, so handle them accordingly.
What Memory Saver does—and when it helps
Memory Saver unloads eligible inactive tabs to reclaim memory; when you return to one, Chrome reloads it. Google’s current consumer help lists three levels:
| Level | How it behaves |
|---|---|
| Moderate | Waits longer before deactivating inactive tabs, so it is less aggressive about reclaiming their memory. |
| Balanced | Google’s recommended setting, balancing memory savings with how long inactive tabs stay active. |
| Maximum | Deactivates inactive tabs after a shorter period to reclaim memory sooner. |
Choose a level in Chrome under Settings > Performance > Memory Saver, where available. You can exclude sites that need to stay active. Google lists active audio or video, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially filled forms, pinned tabs and connected devices among activities that may prevent deactivation.
Best Value
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
This feature is aimed at eligible inactive tabs. It does not fix a page or extension that is using excessive memory while active. Managed Chrome environments also have administrator controls for tab discarding; those policy settings are not ordinary consumer controls.
Quick Recap
What to try, in order
- Identify the task before changing anything. Use Chrome Task Manager to distinguish a busy page, extension or background task from graphics or browser-level work.
- Close only what is safe to lose. Ending a task may discard unsaved page state.
- Test pages and extensions associated with high use. Disable extensions you do not need and compare behavior; check whether a particular site or web app coincides with the increase.
- Use Memory Saver if inactive tabs are the issue. Choose the deactivation level that fits your workflow and account for the reload when you revisit a tab.
- Check overall system pressure. If several applications are short on physical memory, close other programs and check whether your computer supports a compatible memory upgrade. Google identifies low system memory as a possible performance factor, but that does not establish that buying RAM will fix a particular Chrome problem.
- Investigate graphics-related cases specifically. For a graphics-heavy page, consider the page and graphics driver; changing hardware acceleration is not a universal remedy.
