Before handling an SNES cartridge, turn the console off. Hold the cartridge by its shell, do not blow into the cartridge or console slot, and check the cartridge’s edge connector for visible debris before inserting it. Nintendo’s guidance for NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 hardware is to use water only on a soft, slightly damp cloth for cleaning, and to let cleaned components dry completely before use. Nintendo also explicitly warns against cleaning Game Paks with alcohol or other solvents.
How to clean the SNES console exterior
For ordinary dust or grime on the console shell, wipe it with a soft cloth dampened slightly with water. Nintendo’s cartridge-based-system guidance says to use water only and let the component dry completely before using it. Keep the cloth and any moisture away from openings, ventilation slots, and connectors; do not pour or spray liquid onto the console.

Nintendo says not to clean Game Paks with benzene, paint thinner, alcohol, or any other solvent. It also says not to let the connectors become wet or dirty, not to touch them with your fingers, and not to blow on them. Handle cartridges by their plastic shells, and inspect the edge connector for foreign material before inserting a game.

This means alcohol is not Nintendo’s recommended cleaning method for SNES cartridge contacts, even though some community repair guides suggest it. Do not treat advice to use isopropyl alcohol, Brasso, an eraser, or an abrasive as manufacturer-approved: Nintendo’s stated solvent warning directly conflicts with solvent-based contact cleaning.
When a cartridge needs more than an exterior check
An iFixit community guide describes opening a Super Nintendo cartridge and using isopropyl alcohol or Brasso. That is a separate repair approach, not Nintendo guidance, and it conflicts with Nintendo’s warning not to use alcohol or other solvents on Game Paks. Opening a cartridge or attempting deeper contact repair carries more risk than checking for visible foreign material; if you are unsure, consult an experienced repairer rather than assuming a solvent is safe.

How to clean the SNES cartridge slot
Nintendo’s guidance is to check the Game Pak’s edge connector for foreign material before inserting it; it does not recommend blowing into the cartridge or letting connectors get wet. Do not spray cleaner or put a damp cloth into the slot. If debris is visible and cannot be addressed without introducing liquid or forcing anything into the console, stop and seek help from an experienced repairer.

Use and store cartridges and consoles carefully
- Turn the Control Deck off before loading or removing a Game Pak.
- Insert a cartridge without force, and remove it after play.
- Keep the console’s ventilation slots uncovered.
- Store the console and games away from humid or dusty locations, impacts, and temperature extremes.
- Keep fingers, moisture, and breath away from cartridge connectors.
These precautions follow Nintendo’s cartridge-based-system health and safety guidance for NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 hardware. They reduce unnecessary contact with the connectors and help keep the console’s openings clear.
