Chrome updates differ because each platform uses a different system to deliver them: Google Play on Android, Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPad, Google’s updater on Windows and macOS, and each Linux distribution’s package manager. That affects where you check for an update and whether you need to restart Chrome—not necessarily how quickly a release reaches every device.
How Chrome updates are delivered

Google describes mobile updates as managed by the relevant app store, while Windows and macOS use GoogleUpdater. Its update-safety page also says Chrome uses Google servers to count active installations and notify users when a mobile version is out of date. Google’s explanation of Chrome update safety.
Why one device may show an update before another
The update manager and its settings differ by platform. On Android and iOS, whether Chrome updates automatically follows the settings for Google Play or the App Store. On desktop, Chrome can download an update while it remains open, but typically applies it after a relaunch. These differences explain why checking one device may show an update while another does not.
Google’s guidance does not establish a standard delay in hours or days between platforms. A new release schedule also does not mean every device or app store receives the update at the same time.

Chrome’s release schedule
Google’s enterprise release notes say Chrome is moving from a four-week to a two-week release cycle starting with Chrome 153 in September 2026, across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. This is the planned browser release cadence, not a guarantee of simultaneous delivery to every device. Google’s release notes.
Google’s channel guidance also distinguishes the regular Stable channel from Extended Stable. The stated two-week Stable cadence is an operational schedule, not a measurement of how long a particular user waits for an update. Google’s Chrome release-channel guidance.

Extended Stable is for some managed desktop environments
Extended Stable is an enterprise option for managed Windows and Mac devices. Google describes it as an eight-week milestone cycle with weekly security refreshes during the six weeks after the first two weeks of a milestone. It is not supported on Android or iOS, so its schedule does not apply to ordinary mobile Chrome updates. Google’s Extended Stable guidance.

If Chrome has not updated
- Android: Open Google Play, tap your profile icon, select Manage apps & device, and check Updates available for Chrome. Whether updates install automatically depends on Play Store settings. Android instructions.
- iPhone or iPad: Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and check available updates for Chrome. Automatic updates follow App Store settings. iPhone and iPad instructions.
- Windows or Mac: In Chrome, select Help > About Google Chrome, then relaunch if prompted. Google also documents an option on Mac to enable updates for all computer users when Chrome is installed in Applications. Computer instructions.
- Linux: Check for Chrome updates through your distribution’s package manager; the steps vary by distribution.
- Check system support: The reviewed Google guidance lists Android 10 and later and iOS 18 and later. Desktop requirements vary by operating system; check Google’s current Chrome system requirements.
