A treemap disk usage analyzer turns a drive or folder scan into a map of nested rectangles. In WinDirStat, each rectangle represents a file: its area shows its size, its color identifies its file type through the tool’s legend, and its position within larger frames shows where it sits in the folder hierarchy. Read the largest areas first, then check the selected item’s path and size before deciding what to do with it.
What a treemap disk usage analyzer shows
A treemap is a visual summary of files and folders found in a scan. Instead of listing every item in a long table, it packs file-sized rectangles into groups that reflect the directory structure. This lets you spot large space users and see which folder branches contain them.

The WinDirStat project describes its treemap this way: “In the treemap, each rectangle represents a file. Area shows size, color shows file type, and nesting shows the folder structure.” WinDirStat’s project page also describes the linked directory tree and file-type summary.
How to read the map
Start with the largest areas
Rectangle area encodes size according to the scan’s selected size measure. A broad block therefore represents a larger item than a tiny one. Look at the biggest regions first when trying to answer, “What is taking up space on my drive?”
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Follow the nesting to find the folder
Files are grouped within frames representing their containing directories. Follow the enclosing frames to trace a large block up through its folder branch. In WinDirStat, the directory tree is linked to the treemap, so selecting an item can help reveal its location and path.
Read color from the tool’s own legend
Color is a category cue, not a universal disk-analysis standard. In WinDirStat, the extension/type panel provides the key for file-type colors. Another analyzer—or a customized palette—may assign colors differently, so do not infer a file type from color alone.

Select the block and verify its details
Click a block to inspect the corresponding entry in the directory list and check its path, name, type, and size. WinDirStat provides file details and file operations; the map identifies candidates to investigate, not items that are automatically safe to delete.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check what “size” means
Some tools distinguish logical size from physical or allocated size, and treemap views can have configurable size settings. WinDirStat exposes logical and physical size information, while TreeSize documents configurable treemap views. A displayed file size is not necessarily the amount of disk space you would recover by removing the item.

A careful workflow for finding space users
- Scan the relevant location. WinDirStat can scan a drive, a selected drive, a folder, or a command-line target. The map only reflects the scan scope and settings you chose.
- Sort or scan visually for the largest items. Find the broadest blocks, then use the directory tree or enclosing frames to identify their folder branches.
- Select each candidate. Confirm the full path, file type, and displayed size in the linked details before taking action.
- Decide based on what the item is. A large block alone does not establish that a file is disposable or that deleting it will reclaim the displayed amount. Avoid removing files whose purpose you do not understand.
- Refresh the scan after cleanup. Rescan or refresh the view when you need the map to reflect changed contents.
Other tools and what they show
| Tool | What the cited documentation establishes | Useful qualification |
|---|---|---|
| WinDirStat | Interactive treemap linked to a sortable directory tree and an extension/type summary; project materials list zooming, reselection, extension labels, logical or physical sizing, and file details. | Its scan targets include drives and folders. Obtain downloads through the official project releases, Microsoft Store route, or package managers listed by the project; it warns that impersonating download sites exist. |
| WizTree | The vendor describes a size-based visual tree map and says it reads the Master File Table directly when scanning NTFS drives. | These are vendor statements, not an independent speed or accuracy benchmark. The vendor page says personal use is free and commercial use requires a Supporter Code or enterprise license; check its current terms. |
| TreeSize Pro | Vendor guides describe scanning drives, folders, and network paths, with larger treemap rectangles indicating more space. | The cited material is product documentation, not an independent comparison. |
| Microsoft Sysinternals DU | Microsoft documents a command-line utility that reports directory usage, including file and directory size fields. | It is a text-oriented alternative, not a treemap. |
These tools answer related but not identical questions. Compare scan scope, logical versus allocated-size options, interaction and export features, supported operating systems, and personal or business licensing. The cited vendor materials do not establish an independent head-to-head result for speed or accuracy.

Common misreadings to avoid
- Assuming color means the same thing everywhere: consult the specific analyzer’s file-type legend or settings.
- Treating a large block as a deletion recommendation: check what the item is and where it lives before changing it.
- Assuming displayed size equals recoverable space: verify whether the view uses logical or physical size and account for the item’s actual role.
- Reading the map as a complete picture of a whole drive when only a folder was scanned: results cover only the selected scan target and settings.
