Chrome remains the leading Android browser because it is widely present, often set as the default, and convenient for people who use Google accounts and services. Its lead is substantial in observed traffic, but that does not prove it is the best browser for every person—or that all users choose it for the same reason.
How dominant is Chrome on Android?
Two recent measures show Chrome far ahead, though they track traffic rather than asking people which browser they prefer.

- Global request traffic: Cloudflare reported that Chrome accounted for 85% of Android requests it observed in 2025; Samsung Internet accounted for 6.6%. These are Cloudflare Radar request-traffic figures, not a census of Android users or their preferences. Cloudflare Radar’s 2025 Year in Review.
- UK mobile web traffic: The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) reported June 2025 Android browser shares of 80% for Chrome and 16% for Samsung Internet. Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Edge and Brave each had about 1%; figures are rounded. CMA final decision report.
The measures differ in geography and methodology, so they should not be combined into one estimate. Neither says why an individual uses a browser.

Why Chrome is the familiar default
It is often already there
Preinstallation lowers the effort needed to start browsing: a person can open the browser that came with the phone without finding and installing another one. In its historical UK analysis, the CMA found Chrome preinstalled on most Android mobile devices and set as the default on around 44%. It also found a strong association between preinstallation or default status and use. Those figures describe the UK evidence examined in 2020, not current worldwide installation rates. A default is a nudge, not proof that users are unable to choose another browser. Android users can install alternatives and, where the device allows it, select a different default. The practical effect is that switching requires an extra decision and action that staying does not.
Google account continuity saves setup
Google says signing in to Chrome can make bookmarks, passwords and other saved information available across devices, and can help users sign in to Google services. Chrome sign-in is optional. For someone already using Google services, keeping browsing data in the same account can be convenient; for someone who does not want that connection, it is not a reason to choose Chrome. Familiarity compounds the advantage
Once a browser is installed, configured and used across devices, staying with it avoids moving bookmarks, learning another interface or reviewing new settings. That is a reasonable explanation for persistence alongside default placement and account continuity, but the available traffic figures do not measure how much each factor contributes.
Why switching browser brands may not mean switching engines
A browser app’s brand and its rendering engine are different things. In its June 2025 UK analysis, the CMA measured Blink at about 99% of Android browser-engine supply in Google’s mobile ecosystem, with Gecko—the engine used by Firefox—as the key alternative. That is engine share, not browser-app share. CMA final decision report.

Many Android browser apps therefore offer a different interface, settings or feature set while sharing Blink. Choosing a different app can still change the user experience, but a browser’s engine alone does not tell you its privacy practices, blocking tools or every other feature. The CMA identified Samsung Internet, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, DuckDuckGo and Brave among the available Android browsers. In its June 2025 UK figures, Samsung Internet was the only named alternative with a materially larger reported share than the roughly 1% group.
What alternatives can offer—and what the evidence can’t prove
Brave’s Android listing promotes built-in ad blocking, tracking protection, private tabs, bookmark sync and other features. Those are publisher-described features, not independent proof that Brave is the most private or secure option. Performance claims also need careful comparison. Brave published vendor-run testing using a Pixel 6a on Android 13, with browser versions current as of July 1, 2025. Google’s 2026 article discusses Chrome 146 benchmark work on newer Android hardware. The devices and methods differ, so these are not a head-to-head comparison and cannot establish which browser is faster or more battery-efficient for your phone. How to choose an Android browser for yourself
There is no established independent, current test in this evidence comparing the leading Android browsers across speed, battery use, privacy and security. Instead of treating market share or a vendor benchmark as a verdict, choose based on the things you value and check them on your own device.
- Account continuity: If you want bookmarks and saved information to follow your Google account, Chrome’s documented sync may suit you. If you prefer not to sign in, Chrome sign-in is optional.
- Blocking and privacy controls: Decide which controls matter—such as ad blocking, tracking protection or private tabs—and verify how the browser implements them rather than relying on a broad privacy label.
- Interface and defaults: Try the browser you would actually use day to day. A different default can reduce the friction of opening your preferred app.
- Speed and battery: Compare browsers on the same device, Android version, websites, network, privacy settings and tasks. A result from another phone or a vendor’s benchmark may not predict your experience.
- Engine: If engine choice matters to you, distinguish Gecko from Blink; do not assume that a different browser name necessarily means a different engine.
Chrome’s persistence is best understood as the combined effect of availability, defaults, Google-account convenience and a broadly shared engine ecosystem—not as proof that it is universally superior. The evidence supports those factors as plausible contributors, but it does not isolate a single cause or identify one best browser for every Android user.
