Chemically damaged hair can feel rougher or harder to comb because damage changes the hair’s surface and the friction it creates as fibers slide against one another. A 2025 review identifies progressive loss of the hair’s protective 18-methyleicosanoic acid (18-MEA) surface layer as an important contributor to increased friction in aged and weathered hair. The explanation is not simply “more damage means a rougher surface”: friction also depends on surface chemistry, cuticle edges, moisture, and other conditions.
Why friction changes how hair feels
Friction is the resistance that arises when hair fibers or a fiber and another surface move against one another. It affects the sensations of touching, brushing, and combing. In their 2025 review, Erik Weiand and coauthors describe pleasant sensory perception during those activities as largely determined by hair friction. The review treats hair friction as a multiscale problem: surface chemistry and physical features interact with the way hair moves and the conditions around it.

When friction is higher, strands can resist sliding past each other, which may contribute to a rough feel or more difficult combing. That is a useful explanation for how surface changes affect handling, not a guarantee that every person with chemically treated hair will experience the same sensation.
How chemical processing can change the hair surface
The role of 18-MEA
The outer surface of a hair fiber has a protective monolayer containing 18-methyleicosanoic acid, or 18-MEA. The 2025 review identifies progressive loss of this layer as a main contributor to higher friction in aged and weathered hair. Bleaching, colouring, heat, and mechanical processes can accelerate that loss, according to the review.
#1 Best Overall
- Including Ceramide 3, collagen ingredients just five minutes with setting brimming with purity of your hair
- Quick and convenient in-home care possible hair product.
- Recommend! Damage-hair of Intense heat or in the sun.
- A rich, deep repairing treatment mask for damaged, over-processed hair of all textures.
- All type hair / Volume 100ml (3.38 oz)
As the protective surface layer diminishes, fibers may no longer slide as easily. This links changes in surface chemistry with changes in feel; it does not mean that 18-MEA loss is the only cause of friction or that it explains every instance of roughness or tangling.
Friction is not a single-variable result
Hair friction can depend on the direction of movement because edges of the cuticle can interact differently as fibers slide. The review also identifies humidity, cleanliness, age, and biological characteristics as factors. A result observed under one set of conditions therefore should not be treated as a universal prediction for all hair or all brushing and combing.

- 4-Minute Molecular Hair Repair Treatment: A leave-in peptide hair mask designed to repair and reverse damage at the molecular level for stronger, smoother, more resilient hair in just 4 minutes.
- How It Works: Patented K18PEPTIDE repairs hair at a molecular level to reverse damage from bleach, color, chemical services, and heat*. The biotech-developed peptide mimics and clicks into hair's keratin structure to reconnect polypeptide chains and disulfide bonds for strength along the length + width of hair.
- Works on All Hair Types: Because our hair treatment works at the innermost layer of the hair rather than only targeting the outer cuticle like many deep conditioning hair masks, it's effective on all strands, even coily and curly hair.
- Boosts Strength + Smoothness: Helps improve texture, manageability, and bounce with a highly concentrated hair cream formula with detangling and softening benefits. Most see results after 2-3 uses.
- How to Use: Shampoo, skip conditioner, and apply 1-3 pumps of the leave in hair mask to clean, towel-dried hair. Let sit for 4 minutes, do not rinse, then style as usual. Use for 4-6 consecutive washes, then as needed.
What the studies show—and what they do not
Human-hair measurements
A 2010 study measured virgin and chemically damaged human hair fibers in dry and aqueous conditions. It found distinguishable friction coefficients among the studied categories and higher coefficients in water for all categories examined. The researchers also detected conditioner species along the cuticular surface. These findings describe those measured fibers and test conditions; they do not establish a rule for every hair type or every wet-hair situation. The study record summarizes the work.

A 2023 study examined water-lubricated, functionalized silica surfaces in experiments and coarse-grained model surfaces in simulations. In that biomimetic system, increasing modeled chemical damage was associated with higher nanoscale friction, and the researchers attributed the increase to changed surface chemistry rather than changes in roughness or subsurface damage. The study supports a mechanism that can help explain friction; it is not proof that roughness is irrelevant to every form of damage in real hair.

What conditioner can do
Conditioners can deposit chemicals on the hair surface and temporarily affect friction. The 2025 review reports that conditioner deposition can reduce friction to levels similar to virgin hair. That is a surface effect, not evidence that conditioner permanently restores lost 18-MEA or repairs the hair’s structure. The reviewed evidence does not establish that a particular retail product will achieve a specific result.
For a practical product choice, check whether a conditioner is rinse-out or leave-in, whether its stated intended use includes chemically treated hair, its formulation claims, and its directions. Those details can help you choose a product suited to your routine, but a label or ingredient claim alone does not prove a measured friction reduction.

How to interpret roughness or tangling after processing
A rough feel or increased resistance during combing can be consistent with changes to surface chemistry and friction, including loss of protective 18-MEA. It is not a diagnosis of one specific kind of damage. Movement direction, moisture, cleanliness, individual hair characteristics, and the particular treatments or handling involved can all affect the experience. The studies discussed here explain mechanisms and measured conditions; they do not rank comb designs or identify a universally best product.
