Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ChatGPT virtual try-on creates a generated visual preview; it does not photograph the actual garment on you or test its size. OpenAI warns that try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size. A convincing result can suggest an overall look, but it cannot confirm the garment’s true color, construction, measurements, fabric feel, or fit.
Why does my ChatGPT virtual try-on look different from the real item?
The image is generated from visual inputs rather than made by physically dressing you in the garment. ChatGPT has to synthesize how the item might appear on the person in the image. That is not the same as transferring the exact garment dimensions, fabric behavior, or construction into a photograph.

OpenAI’s image-evaluation example treats clothing similarity, resemblance to the person in the reference, and overall realism as distinct judgments. A preview may look convincing in its lighting and composition while simplifying a seam, changing a color, or altering how the garment falls. The example is an evaluation approach, not a published accuracy guarantee. OpenAI’s image-generation evaluation example discusses these separate criteria.

Its system is separate from ChatGPT; it illustrates why virtual try-on is a synthesis problem, not literal photographic transfer. Google’s explanation of its try-on system

OpenAI’s image-editing guidance recommends specifying what should remain unchanged—such as the person’s face, body shape, pose, hair, and expression—and describing realistic draping, folds, occlusion, lighting, and shadows. These constraints can guide a generation, but they do not ensure perfect preservation. OpenAI’s image-generation prompting guide
What can the preview tell you—and what can’t it?
Use the result to consider a broad visual impression, not to verify the real-world product. OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search says try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.

- Garment match: Compare visible color, texture, seams, logos, pockets, and other details with the retailer’s product photos and description.
- Person match: Check whether the generated image preserves the person’s face and body shape; this is separate from whether the garment itself looks right.
- Rendering: Look for unnatural folds, edges, overlap, shadows, lighting, or other artifacts. A realistic-looking image does not prove an exact garment match.
- Size and fit: Do not infer either from the preview. Image realism cannot establish how the actual garment will fit your body.
Can ChatGPT virtual try-on tell me what size to buy?
No. OpenAI expressly says the image does not guarantee fit or size. To choose a size, compare your measurements with the retailer’s size chart and review the product’s stated material and construction. A flexible body measuring tape can help you take your measurements before ordering, but measurements still cannot guarantee how a garment will fit.
How to reduce uncertainty before ordering
- Check the retailer’s listing. Confirm the product details, listed material, construction, and available size chart against the item you intend to buy.
- Compare measurements. Use your own measurements and the retailer’s chart rather than judging size from the generated image.
- Review the return policy. Check the merchant’s terms before purchasing so you know what options apply if the item is not right.
- Verify price and availability with the merchant. OpenAI says shopping details such as price and availability can be wrong, so confirm them on the retailer’s site. OpenAI’s shopping research announcement describes this limitation.
What ChatGPT’s try-on feature does
OpenAI says a “Try on” control may appear on clothing and accessory listings: select it, then take or upload a selfie. You can also upload an image of clothing or an accessory and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. OpenAI identifies ChatGPT Images as the generator behind try-on and says the feature is available on ChatGPT mobile and web. Interfaces and availability can change; consult the Help Center for current details.
