Why ChatGPT Shows Ads and How Ad Targeting Works

OpenAI says ChatGPT ads may use conversation context and, when enabled, selected broader account signals. Here’s what that means for targeting, privacy and user controls.

ChatGPT ads are part of a gradual test: OpenAI says they can help support broader access to the service and continued product investment. Ads may appear for eligible Free and Go users in selected regions; they are labeled as sponsored and displayed separately from ChatGPT’s response. OpenAI says selection can use the current conversation’s context, advertiser inputs and, if personalization is enabled, selected signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience. Its published explanation is company policy, not an independent audit of how ads are delivered.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s Help Center says ads may appear for eligible Free and Go accounts in regions where the test is available. It describes Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts as ad-free, and says accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 do not receive ads. The test is expanding gradually, so availability can change; OpenAI’s August 11, 2026 announcement named the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea as markets it had launched in after starting the test in the United States on February 9, 2026. That announcement is not a complete or guaranteed current country list. OpenAI’s current Ads in ChatGPT help page points to availability information.

Temporary Chats do not show ads, according to the current Help Center. Eligible users in supported or soon-to-be-supported regions may also have a free no-ads option with additional limits. The exact plans and choices shown depend on account and region.

How does ChatGPT decide which ad to show?

OpenAI describes selection as a relevance process, not a simple keyword trigger. Ads may be selected using several kinds of context and advertiser input:

  • The current conversation: Its context and intent may be considered, so an ad can relate to what is being discussed in that thread.
  • The ad itself: The creative text and landing page can help determine whether it is relevant.
  • Advertiser inputs: Advertisers can provide context hints about conversations, topics or keywords that may suit their offering, along with targeting selections. OpenAI says these hints guide matching; they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation.
  • Broader ChatGPT signals: When ad personalization is enabled, selected signals may also include the current thread, past chats, memory and interactions with ads.

OpenAI says relevance and outcomes inform ad selection. Where multiple eligible ads compete, relevance and advertiser bids can affect ranking. Its advertiser materials describe a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. This does not mean every conversation generates an ad, or that mentioning a topic guarantees a match. See Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics for OpenAI’s description of the advertiser side.

Does ad personalization mean advertisers can read your chats?

No—not according to OpenAI’s stated policy. The company says it does not share conversations with advertisers or sell user data to them. Advertisers receive aggregated performance reporting, such as ad views and clicks, rather than users’ chats or personal details. OpenAI says that information not shared includes chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address and sensitive information. These are OpenAI’s own policy claims, not independently verified findings.

If you choose to contact an advertiser through an ad, that advertiser can see the messages you send directly to it. That is different from seeing the ChatGPT conversation in which the ad appeared.

What can you control?

Where the feature is available, ad settings are under Settings > Ad Controls. OpenAI says controls are limited to Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or expected soon. Personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland; regional availability may change.

  • Turn off ad personalization: OpenAI says this prevents selected signals from other chats, ad history or topics from being used for ad selection. It does not prevent the current thread’s context from being considered.
  • Inspect or dismiss an ad: You can ask why an ad was shown, hide it or report it.
  • Clear ads data: OpenAI says deleting this data stops it being used for ad selection. It may remain on OpenAI’s servers for up to 30 days before removal; this is a statement about deleted ads data, not general chat retention.

OpenAI also says viewing, hiding, reporting or clicking an ad does not add those actions to ChatGPT memory. For the company’s instructions and qualifications, see its ads overview and ads FAQ.

Can ads affect ChatGPT’s answers?

OpenAI says ads are served separately from the chat model and do not influence answers. It states that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT’s responses. An ad that appears relevant is paid advertising, not a ChatGPT recommendation or endorsement. This, too, is OpenAI’s published position rather than an independent audit. See OpenAI’s explanation of its advertising approach.

Why might there be no ad—or an ad that seems unrelated?

Ads depend on eligibility, region, account settings and whether an eligible ad is available for the context. Advertiser hints do not guarantee delivery, and OpenAI describes a selection process involving multiple signals rather than a one-to-one match between a phrase and an ad. OpenAI also says ads are not eligible next to sensitive or regulated conversations, including personal health, mental health and politics. Its ad policies distinguish those placement limits from rules about which advertisers or ad content may participate: some regulated categories may be allowed for approved advertisers after manual case-by-case review. Therefore, the policy should not be read as a blanket ban on every healthcare or financial ad in every context. See OpenAI’s ad policies.
