V1 uses an incrementing uint64; V2 uses a bytes32 identifier computed off-chain at attestation time. Circle’s V2 source-message format initially serializes an empty nonce, so an arrival checker that treats that source-side placeholder as the final identifier can fail to match a valid destination receipt.

Circle’s MessageV2 source notes the type change: “Nonce is now bytes32 (vs. uint64).” The important difference is not just field width: V1’s nonce is a sequential counter, while V2’s identifier is assigned through a different process.

Why can the V2 nonce appear empty in the source message?
In Circle’s V2 message layout, the nonce field begins at byte offset 12 and occupies 32 bytes. The source formatter places EMPTY_NONCE in that field when it serializes the message. The CCTP V2 white paper explains that the operational nonce is computed at attestation time.
That means an empty value in the emitted source message is not necessarily the final identifier used for arrival matching. The exact representation returned by an integration’s API can depend on that API; the source format alone does not establish that all APIs expose identical bytes or fields.

Why does this break cross-chain arrival checks?
A checker can fail when it uses the source event’s raw V2 message nonce as its final lookup key. If it later compares that empty placeholder with the attestation-populated V2 message or the destination receipt’s nonce, the values do not match, even though the transfer may have arrived. This is a consequence of the documented construction and assignment behavior, not a claim that every indexer or API handles the message identically.
The V2 nonce still matters at the destination. Circle’s MessageTransmitterV2 source validates the message version and nonce availability, marks the nonce as used, and emits the bytes32 nonce in MessageReceived. It is part of replay protection, not disposable metadata.

How should an integration match a V2 transfer?
- Determine the message version. Decode V1 and V2 according to their own layouts and nonce semantics; do not infer the version from nonce width alone if the surrounding message provides a version field.
- For V2, do not finalize the arrival key from the source placeholder. Treat the source message’s empty nonce as a pre-attestation value, not as the completed V2 identifier.
- Match using attestation-backed V2 message data and the destination receipt. Compare the relevant V2 fields, including the destination’s
MessageReceivednonce, using the API and contract semantics of your integration. - Keep version-specific persistence and decoding. Store enough version and message context to avoid treating a V1 sequential nonce and a V2
bytes32value as interchangeable identifiers.
The exact API fields and storage strategy depend on the integration. Circle’s legacy Get an attestation API reference documents legacy behavior; it is not a universal V2 field-mapping recipe.
Can a V1 nonce be converted into the matching V2 nonce?
No arithmetic conversion is established. A V1 counter and a V2 attestation-time identifier are produced differently, so widening a V1 integer or formatting it as 32 bytes does not derive the corresponding V2 nonce. Use the message and receipt fields for the version actually processed.

What does the V1-to-V2 migration mean for developers?
In an announcement dated November 14, 2025, Circle described V2 as canonical and V1 as legacy. The announcement said manual V1 phase-out would begin July 31, 2026, followed by a full contract pause at the end of the announced deprecation period. Those dates describe Circle’s announced schedule, not a guarantee of current availability on every chain; check Circle’s latest deprecation notice and chain-specific status before relying on V1.
Circle said CCTP V2 launched March 11, 2025, and V1 launched April 26, 2023. Its announcement advised existing developers to plan migration and new integrators to use V2. Regardless of migration timing, the nonce handling must remain version-aware.

Do not confuse the CCTP nonce with a transaction nonce
The nonce discussed here belongs to the CCTP message and destination replay-protection flow. It is not the account transaction nonce used by the underlying blockchain to order or prevent replay of transactions. A transaction explorer’s nonce field therefore does not substitute for the CCTP message nonce.
