Cash App may block an attempt to add money because the linked bank account or card is ineligible or declined, your account needs verification, you have reached an account-specific limit, or the service is temporarily having trouble. First identify whether you’re adding money from a linked payment source or depositing physical cash at a retailer: those are separate features with different requirements.
Check which way you’re trying to add money
Funding from a linked source
For an in-app transfer, Cash App’s instructions say to open the Money tab, tap Add money, enter an amount, and confirm. The available funding methods listed include a linked bank account, debit card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. If the option you expect is missing or the transfer fails, check the source and any account prompts before trying again. See Cash App’s Add Money instructions.

Depositing paper money
If you have physical cash, look for Deposit paper money in the Money tab. This is a retailer-based service, not the same as an in-app transfer from a bank or card. Availability depends on your account and participating locations.

If a bank or debit card transfer is failing
Check that the linked source meets Cash App’s U.S. requirements. Its U.S. terms say an external bank account must be in the United States and you must be authorized to use it. An external debit card must be valid, issued by a U.S. financial institution, and carry a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover logo. A source that does not meet these conditions may not be eligible. - Confirm the account or card is still active and that you are authorized to use it.
- If Cash App declines one source, try another eligible linked method if you have one.
- Look for an in-app notice asking you to verify information or take another action.
Check verification prompts and account limits
Cash App says an account it cannot verify may remain restricted and lose access to certain services. Its terms also allow it to set balance and transaction limits. These restrictions and limits can be account-specific, so another user’s experience—or a limit mentioned elsewhere—does not establish what applies to your account. Follow prompts shown in the app; if the reason remains unclear, contact Cash App through its official in-app support channel.
If you’re depositing physical cash
- Open the Money tab and choose Deposit paper money.
- Enter your ZIP code to find participating locations nearby.
- Follow the app’s instructions to present the generated barcode or use an active Cash App Card, as the retailer allows.
- Check the app and retailer’s requirements before traveling, and keep the receipt after the deposit.
Eligibility and deposit limits are determined by Cash App and may depend on factors such as account history, direct-deposit history, and spending activity. Your available limit is shown in the app. Cash App’s U.S. terms list a $1 fee per paper-money deposit and say a retailer may require a $5 or $20 minimum, depending on the deposit method. Confirm the fee, minimum, and current availability in the app and with the store before depositing.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
Rule out a temporary service issue
A problem with one funding route does not always mean your account or payment source is at fault. On October 5, 2026, Cash App Status reported that an Apple Pay Add Money issue was resolved for most customers, while noting a small number of attempts could still fail. It advised customers who saw an error to wait a few minutes and retry, or use a different debit card or linked external bank account. On October 6, the status page showed Add Cash operational with no incident reported that day. Those are dated status snapshots, not a diagnosis of a later or account-specific decline. When the app still won’t accept the money
If the app continues to block the transaction after you’ve checked the method, source eligibility, account prompts, and current service status, contact Cash App through its official in-app support channel. The exact cause cannot be determined without the error message and account-specific information. Do not give your PIN or password to anyone claiming they can fix the transfer.

- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
Cash App’s terms also list direct deposits and incoming peer-to-peer payments as ways funds may reach a balance. These may be alternatives when appropriate, but they do not resolve or explain a failed Add Money transfer.
