If Bluetooth is on but one accessory will not appear, pair, or stay connected, start with that accessory’s power, pairing mode, range, and saved connection. These symptoms have different causes, so identify which one you have before changing settings.
First, identify what is failing

| The connection starts and then drops | Check the accessory’s battery and distance, then refresh the connection and restart the devices if needed. |
Try these checks for a pairing or connection problem
These steps apply when Bluetooth is available and the problem is a particular accessory. Menu names differ by operating system; use the platform-specific guidance below if you cannot find the controls.

- Check the accessory. Turn it on, charge it or replace its batteries, and put it into pairing mode using the accessory maker’s instructions. A device can power on yet still have too little battery for reliable pairing or connection.
- Bring it close. Keep the accessory near the phone or computer while pairing. Move it away from other potential obstacles or sources of interference if the connection keeps dropping.
- Refresh Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. Power-cycle the accessory as well.
- Remove and pair again. If the accessory is listed but will not connect, remove or forget it in the host’s Bluetooth settings. Put the accessory back into pairing mode and add it again. Microsoft recommends removing and re-adding a device that appears in Windows but will not connect (Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting steps).
- Restart and update. Restart the host device and install available operating-system updates. If the issue remains, follow the support steps for your platform rather than installing a generic driver from an unknown site.
If Bluetooth is missing or greyed out on Windows
A missing control is not the same as a failed headphone or speaker pairing. Microsoft lists several possible causes, including a PC that lacks Bluetooth, a disabled physical wireless switch, settings or driver problems, stopped services, hardware faults, and issues after an update. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; check the exact PC model before changing drivers.
Check capability and controls
- Look up your PC’s specifications or manufacturer documentation to confirm that it has Bluetooth.
- Check for a physical wireless switch or key combination, if the model has one.
- On Windows 11, look under Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Bluetooth is also available in taskbar Quick Settings.

Run Windows troubleshooting
On Windows 11, start the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app, as Microsoft recommends. You can also check for Windows updates and restart the PC. Microsoft’s Bluetooth guidance covers Windows 10 as well, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; see Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
If the PC has no built-in Bluetooth, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter may add that capability. Check the adapter’s compatibility with your PC and operating system. It will not, by itself, fix a low accessory battery, a pairing-mode problem, or a software or hardware fault in an existing Bluetooth adapter.

If Bluetooth will not turn on on an iPhone or iPad
Check that the accessory is powered on and set up for pairing, then follow Apple’s connection steps for the specific accessory. If the Bluetooth setting itself cannot be turned on or is greyed out, Apple advises contacting Apple Support rather than treating it as a routine accessory-pairing failure. If an Android phone will not find or connect to an accessory
Use Google’s instructions for the specific Android Bluetooth symptom, since steps can vary by device and problem. If an accessory asks for a passcode and you do not know it, Google says 0000 and 1234 are common passcodes to try; neither is a universal code. When to contact the device maker
Escalate to the manufacturer when Bluetooth remains missing or disabled after the relevant checks, or when the same device fails with multiple known-good accessories. For a computer, use support and drivers for its exact model; for a phone or tablet, use the maker’s support channel. If only one accessory fails, consult that accessory’s setup instructions and support first.
