If an app won’t install on your Android TV, the usual causes are that the app isn’t offered for your TV’s model, the TV is short on storage, or the Play Store, network connection, or system software needs attention. Work through those in that order, starting with availability, because no storage or network fix can make an app appear for a device it doesn’t support. Menu names and options differ by manufacturer and model, so treat the steps below as a guide to what to look for rather than exact button sequences.
Confirm the app is offered for your TV
Open the Play Store on the TV and search for the app by name. If it doesn’t appear, the app may not be offered in Google Play in your region or may not support your device. Google’s help page on missing apps says that individual app developers determine compatibility, so an app that doesn’t show up usually reflects its availability rather than a fault in your TV. If the app does appear, open its listing and look for device compatibility information. If your TV’s model isn’t covered, the install will fail regardless of how much storage you free up or how fast your connection is. In that case, check the developer’s support information or your TV manufacturer’s support site for alternatives or a version for your platform.

Free up storage, and know the limits of USB expansion
Low storage is a plausible cause of failed installs. The simplest documented fix is to remove apps and games you no longer use, then retry the install. Google’s help page on downloading and deleting apps covers this process for Android TV. Google Android TV Help: Download or delete apps & games
Some supported Android TV devices can use a USB drive as extra storage. Google’s storage guidance says this can help, but also warns that the steps may not work on every TV and that formatting the drive erases everything on it. The page specifies FAT formats. Before you use a USB drive
- Confirm that your specific TV supports USB storage expansion. Support is device-dependent.
- Move any files you want to keep off the drive first, because formatting erases existing contents.
- Use a file system your TV’s documentation lists. Google’s page names FAT formats.
Check the network connection and restart
Confirm that the TV is connected to the network you intend to use, then retry the install. Google’s Google TV troubleshooting page advises checking network settings and restarting the router or adjusting the connection where needed. Restart the TV and check for system updates
Restart the TV, then check whether a system update is available and install it if so. Google’s general guidance on fixing Play Store download problems recommends the same basics: check connectivity and storage, confirm system updates are installed, and restart. That guidance includes a storage warning of less than 1 GB. The threshold is written for Android phones and tablets, so do not treat it as a rule for Android TV storage.
Clear app data before resetting anything
Google’s Google TV troubleshooting page also lists clearing app data as a step. It is less disruptive than a reset, but it removes that app’s saved data, so expect to sign in again and re-enter any settings the app stored.

Use a factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset erases the TV’s device data. Google’s Google TV troubleshooting page places it late in its sequence, and that order is the one to follow. Work through the availability, storage, network, restart, and update checks first. If you do reset, back up anything you need, and expect to set up the TV again from the beginning.

If your built-in platform doesn’t offer an app, a separate Google TV streaming device can be an option, but it is conditional. Google’s install and setup help pages describe the Google TV app installation flow, and app and feature availability varies by device and region. A streaming device does not guarantee that a given app will install, so confirm the app is listed for that device and region before you buy. If the install fails because of storage, USB expansion addresses the cause directly on a device that supports it. If the install fails because the app isn’t offered for your platform, a streaming device is worth considering only after you confirm the app is listed for that device in your region.
