The answer depends on which hero you mean. In the October 6, 2026 retail update, Blizzard removed Sombra’s ability to Hack enemy heroes; her Hotfix can still hack health packs and most enemy deployables. Roadhog’s Chain Hook, by contrast, can fail when a wall or corner blocks his line of sight, or when the target leaves that sightline during the pull.
Why Sombra can’t Hack an enemy hero
Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 retail patch notes say Sombra moved from Damage to Support and that Hack was removed from her kit. That means an enemy-hero Hack attempt is not merely being interrupted or missing: the current kit described in those notes no longer includes that ability.

The rework replaces the old ability-lockout mechanic with Weaken, which reduces a target’s damage and healing output by half. The notes also reduce EMP damage from 25% to 20% of the target’s current health. Those are separate changes; neither restores enemy-hero Hack.
What Sombra can still hack
Hotfix is a different ability from the removed enemy Hack. It heals an ally over time and can also target health packs and most enemy deployables to hack them. For the health-pack and deployable interaction, damage interrupts the channel. It has a separate six-second cooldown, and Sombra can use it while stealthed; doing so temporarily reveals her without ending stealth.

Why older instructions may disagree
Blizzard’s Sombra hero page describes the older enemy Hack, including its held-action and damage-interruption behavior. That page conflicts with the newer retail patch notes about whether enemy Hack is available. For the current ability, the dated October 6, 2026 patch notes are the more recent source.
Why Roadhog’s Chain Hook misses or lets go
Chain Hook uses line of sight. Blizzard’s January 2017 patch notes specify that the initial line-of-sight check is made from Roadhog’s position, not from the hook. They also state that a hooked target is released if it leaves Roadhog’s sightline before the pull finishes. The stated intent was to prevent hooking or pulling targets around corners.

Check the sightline at both points
- At the moment you cast Hook, check whether Roadhog has a direct view of the target. A clear path for the hook itself does not replace the line-of-sight check from Roadhog.
- During the pull, watch for a corner, wall, or other geometry that could cut off Roadhog’s view. A target that breaks sightline before the pull completes can be released.
Check the cooldown and mode
Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 patch notes list Chain Hook’s cooldown as six seconds in 5v5 and seven seconds in 6v6. Confirm the ability is available before treating an apparent failure as a sightline problem; the cooldown differs by mode.
Current pull details
The same October 6 notes list 0.3 seconds of stun after the pull and a final target distance of 4.5 meters from Roadhog. These values describe what happens after a successful pull; they do not override the line-of-sight rule.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Trying to Hack an enemy hero as Sombra: enemy Hack was removed in the October 6, 2026 retail update. Look to her current kit rather than instructions for the previous one.
- Using Hotfix on a health pack or deployable: damage interrupts the interaction; the health-pack/deployable use also has its own six-second cooldown.
- Trying to hook through or around a corner: check Roadhog’s view of the target when casting and throughout the pull.
- Hook appears unavailable: verify its cooldown for the mode you are playing—six seconds in 5v5, seven in 6v6, per the October 6, 2026 notes.
These published rules explain common causes, but they cannot identify the cause of a particular replay or establish that every apparent miss has the same explanation. The cited official sources do not diagnose match-specific server, input, or other interaction problems.
