Why Can’t I Delete Temporary Internet Files? How to Clear a Stubborn Browser Cache

A cache that seems stubborn may be in use, retained by browser settings, or confused with synced data. Learn the safe way to clear it.

Temporary internet files are cached copies of web pages and media that a browser saves so sites can load faster. If they seem impossible to delete, the files may be in use, the browser may be set to keep them when it closes, or you may be looking at synced or cloud data instead of the local cache. Start with the browser’s built-in clear-data control; avoid manually deleting files from an active browser profile.

What temporary internet files are—and what clearing them does

A browser cache stores local copies of website content, such as images and other media, for faster repeat visits. Microsoft describes temporary internet files as data saved automatically to help pages load faster (Microsoft Support). Clearing cache can help with some loading or formatting problems and free local storage, but the browser may download the content again as you visit sites.

Cache is separate from cookies, browsing history, saved passwords, and autofill information. In Edge, these appear as distinct data categories in the clearing controls. Selecting cookies or other categories can have separate effects—for example, clearing cookies may sign you out of websites—so choose only what you intend to remove (Microsoft Support; Google Account Help).

Why deletion can appear to fail

The cache file is locked or in use

A browser or another program using the browser profile may have a cache file open. Microsoft’s WinINet documentation says the DeleteUrlCacheEntry call can fail with ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED when a cache file is locked or in use (Microsoft Learn). That explains one kind of access-denied failure; it does not establish the cause of every case where cache appears to remain.

The browser is not set to clear cache when it closes

Edge does not clear cached images and files on close by default. Its clear-on-exit behavior can be configured, unless the setting is controlled by an administrator policy (Microsoft Learn). If you expect normal browser closure to erase the cache, this default can explain why it remains.

You are checking a different copy of the data

Local browser data on a device is distinct from information stored through sync or account personalization. Microsoft notes that deleting data through its privacy dashboard does not itself remove the copy stored on the device (Microsoft Support). First identify whether you mean the current device’s cache, synced browsing data, or account-level data.

The browser has created new cache after clearing

Browsers cache website content as you browse. If you reopen pages or visit sites after clearing, some cache can be created again. Seeing cached data later does not by itself show that the original deletion failed.

Clear the cache safely in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data. Microsoft documents this route; labels can change in later Edge releases (Microsoft Support).

  2. Choose the time range you want, then select Cached images and files and clear the data.

  3. Leave cookies, history, passwords, and autofill unselected unless you also want to remove those separate data types. Clearing cookies may sign you out of sites; removing saved information can have other consequences.

  4. If the cache still appears to remain, close Edge and other applications that may be using its profile, restart the device, and try the built-in clearing control again. Restarting is a cautious troubleshooting step based on the documented possibility of locked files, not a guaranteed fix.

  5. If you still see an error, note its exact wording and seek browser or operating-system support. The cited documentation explains the lock behavior but does not provide one universal end-user method for identifying and releasing every file lock.

Make Edge clear cached files when it closes

To clear cache automatically on exit, use Edge’s Clear browsing data settings and enable the option for cached images and files under data to clear when the browser closes. The exact labels and availability can vary, and a managed-device policy may control the setting. Microsoft documents the policy and confirms that clearing cached images and files on close is not enabled by default (Microsoft Learn).

What to expect in other browsers

The same distinction between cache and other browsing data matters in Chrome: Google says cached website information can be cleared to address loading or formatting problems or free storage, while clearing cookies can affect sign-ins. Some sites may load more slowly the next time as content is fetched again (Google Account Help). For Firefox, Safari, and other browsers, use that browser’s own support instructions; the specific steps differ.
