In RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Tier 5 gathering tools are the Steel Pickaxe and Steel Logging Axe, also called Power Level 5 tools in current guides. To craft them, reach Fellhollow, mine Coal to unlock the Blast Furnace, make Steel Bars, and gather Willow Logs plus the tool-specific finishing material. Both tools require 8 Steel Bars and 6 Willow Logs; the Pickaxe also needs 4 Draconic Leather, while the Logging Axe needs 4 Fine Thread.
What you need before crafting Tier 5 tools
Have the Iron Pickaxe and Iron Logging Axe before starting the Steel upgrades. The Iron Logging Axe is specifically reported as the minimum needed to chop Willow Trees. The route also requires access to Fellhollow, where Coal and Willow Logs are found.

How to unlock the Blast Furnace
- Reach Fellhollow. Bring your iron gathering tools so you can collect the materials needed for the next tier.
- Mine Coal. Current guides report Coal Nodes on cliffs, walls, and rocky surfaces in Fellhollow. Mining Coal is the reported trigger that makes the Blast Furnace available in the build menu.
- Build the Blast Furnace. One September 2026 guide lists a construction cost of 12 Granite, 4 Iron Bars, 2 Draconic Leather, 15 Fire Runes, and 2 Vault Cores. It also says the station must be exposed, with no ceiling overhead. Treat those placement and material details as guide-reported rather than an official recipe; check the build interface before gathering everything.
Make Steel Bars, but verify the recipe in-game
Current guides do not agree on the Blast Furnace’s exact Steel Bar inputs or explain fuel use consistently. One describes 1 Iron Bar and 1 Coal, with a Fuel Pellet loaded as fuel; another lists either 3 Iron Ore plus 3 Coal or 1 Iron Bar plus 3 Coal. Because the quantities conflict, do not rely on a fixed shopping list from those guides. Open the in-game Journal or recipe display to confirm the current requirements before smelting.
The September guide says Fuel Pellets are made at a Blacksmith’s Bench from 1 Charcoal, 1 Adhesive, and 1 Coarse Animal Fur, and are used as Blast Furnace fuel. It also says an ordinary Furnace makes Iron Bars from Iron Ore and Charcoal. Jagex’s Crafting help explains that the Journal and crafting interface show recipes and resource requirements, but does not document Tier 5 tool or Blast Furnace recipes.

Gather the shared and tool-specific materials
Both Steel tools require Willow Logs, which the September 2026 guide locates near Bleakfields Valley in Fellhollow. Their final ingredients differ: Corpse Cotton is processed into Fine Thread for the Logging Axe, while Dragonwolf Hide is processed into Draconic Leather for the Pickaxe.
Craft the Steel Pickaxe and Steel Logging Axe
Use a Blacksmith’s Bench. The current guides agree on the following tool recipes:

| Tool | Steel Bars | Willow Logs | Finishing material | Reported use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel Pickaxe | 8 | 6 | 4 Draconic Leather | Mine additional resource nodes |
| Steel Logging Axe | 8 | 6 | 4 Fine Thread | Chop additional trees |
These tools expand which nodes you can mine and which trees you can chop, enabling further map progression. The available guides do not provide a complete node-by-node compatibility list, so check the target resource in-game rather than assuming every locked node requires one of these tools.
Choose which tool to craft first
The two recipes share their largest listed ingredients, so your immediate bottleneck is usually the finishing material and the resource you want to gather next. Craft the Pickaxe first if Draconic Leather is available and mining access is holding up your progress; choose the Logging Axe first if you have Fine Thread and need to open up tree gathering. The cited guides do not establish a numeric comparison for speed, efficiency, or durability.

Recipe displays can change with patches, so verify the current requirements in the Journal before committing materials. Jagex’s Crafting help says tools wear out and eventually break. To restore one, take it to a Crafting Table and switch the station to Repair mode; the official help documents this general workflow, not a Tier 5-specific repair cost.
