Fibre is the café’s link to the internet; Wi-Fi is the separate radio link between its router or access point and your device. If that wireless link is weak or busy, a webpage can stall even though the café’s incoming service is capable of high speeds.
Fast fibre and fast Wi-Fi are different things
Think of the connection as two links in sequence: the café’s internet service carries traffic to and from the wider internet, while Wi-Fi carries it between the access point and your phone or laptop. The slower or less reliable link can limit what you experience. A fast fibre plan does not guarantee that every device, in every seat, gets a fast wireless connection.

Intel lists several factors that affect Wi-Fi performance, including channel characteristics, other devices using the band, and physical obstructions. A crowded radio environment is one possible cause of a slow connection—not proof that a particular café’s network is congested. The cited guidance does not establish a specific café’s fibre speed, measured slowdown, or cause.
Why the familiar 2.4 GHz channels can get busy
Wi-Fi devices share radio airtime. When multiple nearby networks or devices use the same channel, they may have to take turns transmitting. That shared use can contribute to delays, particularly when many devices are active. Intel notes that performance in a crowded wireless landscape can vary as other people use their Wi-Fi networks.

For 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Cisco identifies channels 1, 6, and 11 as a common non-overlapping plan. The three-channel plan is not a universal rule for every country: permitted channels and regulatory requirements vary by region. Cisco says only channels 1, 6, and 11 are available for non-interfering operation in the United States; Intel’s recommendation to use those channels is explicitly for North America.
Even where that plan applies, three channels do not mean there are only three Wi-Fi networks. Multiple access points can use the same channel, so nearby networks and devices can contend for airtime. The channel plan helps explain why 2.4 GHz can be crowded; it does not quantify how much a café connection will slow.

Congestion is only one possible cause
A slow page can result from more than channel crowding. The signal may be weak where you are sitting, or walls, furniture, and other physical obstacles may reduce its quality. The café may also have many active devices sharing the network. These factors can overlap, and a guest usually cannot tell which one is responsible from a spinner alone.

Wi-Fi band characteristics also differ. A device and access point may offer bands beyond 2.4 GHz, but which options are available depends on the equipment and network configuration. Moving to another band can help in some situations, but it is not a guaranteed fix for weak coverage, a busy network, or an upstream problem.

What a café guest can try
- Check whether the problem follows your location. If the connection improves closer to the access point or in another part of the café, signal conditions or obstacles may be contributing.
- Try another available network band if the café offers one. Your device must support it, and the venue must have enabled it.
- Compare with another device or connection. If only one device struggles, its Wi-Fi connection may be the issue; if several do, the venue network or its internet service may be involved. This comparison can narrow possibilities but cannot identify the cause with certainty.
- Ask café staff whether they can check the network. Guests generally do not have access to the access-point settings needed to change channels or reconfigure the venue Wi-Fi.
What the café operator can investigate
An operator can assess nearby channel use and, where equipment and local rules permit, choose a less-used channel. Intel describes using a Wi-Fi analyzer or Killer Control Center in supported environments to assess channel use. A channel change may reduce contention, but it will not necessarily resolve weak coverage, obstacles, heavy demand, or limits elsewhere in the network.
Without measurements from the venue, there is no sound basis for assigning a specific cause or a numerical slowdown. The practical distinction is that fibre capacity describes the incoming service, while the Wi-Fi experience depends on the radio link and conditions at the client’s location.
