To turn off predictive text on an iPad, open Settings > General > Keyboard and switch off Predictive Text. You can also open the keyboard’s settings while typing. Predictive Text is separate from Auto-Correction and Text Replacement, so those features may need separate changes.
Turn off Predictive Text in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Keyboard.
- Turn off Predictive Text.
Apple’s iPad guide to Predictive Text also describes a shortcut: with the onscreen keyboard open, touch and hold the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key, tap Keyboard Settings, then turn off Predictive Text. This opens the setting without leaving the app where you are typing.

What changes when Predictive Text is off?
Predictive Text can show suggested words, emoji, and other suggestions above the onscreen keyboard. It can also display inline predictions as gray text that completes a word or phrase. In Apple’s main guide, switching off Predictive Text disables both suggestions and inline predictions. The Hong Kong edition of Apple’s iPad guide documents a separate Show Predictions Inline control, so the available controls can vary by iPadOS version or guide edition.
Stop automatic spelling changes separately
Turning off Predictive Text does not necessarily stop the iPad from correcting misspelled words. To change automatic replacements, go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Auto-Correction. Apple describes Auto-Correction and predictive text as separate keyboard features in its Auto-Correction and predictive text guide. If you want to keep a suggested correction while dismissing it, tap its x when it appears.

Change keyboard settings for an external keyboard
Predictive Text and Smart Punctuation can apply to onscreen and external keyboards. Some typing options for a connected hardware keyboard have their own controls: open Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard to find options such as Auto-Correction and Auto-Capitalization. Apple’s iPadOS 27 guide to typing assistance with an Apple external keyboard explains these hardware-keyboard options, while its iPadOS 26 guide to Apple external keyboard shortcuts places Predictive Text in the general Keyboard settings.
Manage saved text shortcuts separately
If the iPad keeps expanding a particular abbreviation into a phrase, check Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement. This is where you can add or remove saved shortcuts. Turning off Predictive Text does not delete or change Text Replacement entries.

If Predictive Text is missing or behaves differently
Predictive Text and inline predictions are not available for every language. If you cannot find the same controls or do not see predictions while typing, check Apple’s language availability information and confirm which iPadOS version your iPad uses. The setting names and whether inline predictions have a separate switch can differ across versions.
