That is a profile change, not necessarily a fault in the headphones. Windows documents this behavior, and Apple describes similar quality and volume changes on Mac when an app uses the headphone microphone.
Why microphone use changes Bluetooth audio
A2DP is the Bluetooth Classic route for sending stereo audio from a computer or phone to headphones. It is designed for playback and does not carry the headphone microphone input. When an app needs that microphone, the system uses HFP, the hands-free route for two-way voice. Microsoft documents HFP playback and capture as monaural on Windows, so music can sound narrower and less detailed while the mic is active. Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth documentation explains the profile change.

On Windows 11, the system automatically selects HFP when an app opens the Bluetooth microphone endpoint or creates a communications-category playback stream. When the microphone closes, Windows can return to A2DP if media is still playing. The switch may therefore happen as soon as a call, game, meeting, or voice-chat app starts using the headset mic.
HFP voice modes are documented at 8 kHz for narrowband and 16 kHz for wideband. These are sample rates, not bitrates or direct measurements of perceived quality. A 48 kHz playback stream is one example Microsoft gives of audio being resampled to match the active HFP endpoint. Device and radio compatibility can also determine whether wideband is available or the connection falls back to narrowband. Microsoft’s profile documentation and its Bluetooth audio gateway documentation describe these modes and endpoint behavior.

How to keep better playback while using a microphone
Use a separate microphone on Bluetooth Classic
If you do not need the microphone built into the headphones, select a USB microphone or the computer’s built-in mic as the input in the call or chat app, and leave the Bluetooth headphones selected as output. This avoids opening the headset’s Bluetooth microphone path, so the system can keep using A2DP for playback. App controls vary, so check the audio input setting inside the app as well as the computer’s system sound settings.
Keep using the headset microphone
If the headphone mic is essential, expect Bluetooth Classic systems to use HFP for the two-way connection. Wideband HFP may sound better than narrowband in some setups, but it remains a monaural voice path; support depends on the headset, computer, radio, and drivers. Close the app or release its microphone permission when you finish. On Windows, the profile can switch back toward A2DP once the mic is no longer active and media continues.

What to do on a Mac
Apple says audio quality and volume can drop, and static or popping may occur, when an app uses the Bluetooth headphones’ microphone. Quit apps using that mic, including conferencing or chat apps, and make sure Sound settings are not left open. If quality stays reduced, open Control Center > Sound, select the Mac’s internal speakers, then select the Bluetooth headphones again. These steps are from Apple Support’s guidance for Bluetooth audio quality.

Some supported Windows 11 systems can play stereo audio while the Bluetooth microphone is active using Bluetooth LE Audio. Microsoft’s requirements are specific: Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, a PC with factory-integrated Bluetooth LE support, appropriate manufacturer drivers, and headphones, earbuds, or speakers that support LE Audio. Microsoft’s current support page also references Windows updates at build 26100.4484 or newer for some supported systems. The LE Audio label on headphones alone does not confirm that a particular computer-and-headset pairing supports stereo during mic use. Check the exact PC, driver, Windows version, and audio device against Microsoft’s Windows LE Audio support guidance.

If microphone-active stereo glitches or audio drops out on an eligible system, Microsoft recommends trying mono for compatibility. Bluetooth LE Audio is therefore a conditional option, not a guaranteed fix for every headset or PC.

The most reliable fix with existing Bluetooth Classic headphones is usually to route the microphone through a separate device. If the headset mic must be used, the narrower sound is a consequence of the voice profile; stereo while speaking requires the full set of supported LE Audio hardware and software.
