Blizzard says it is announcing major games years ahead because better long-range planning has made it more confident about sharing target release years—and because earlier announcements give players a clearer sense of what is coming while leaving teams time to make the games. The company also says early conversations can help it hear what players want. Those are Blizzard’s stated reasons, not proof that a target year cannot change.
Why Blizzard says it is announcing games early
Blizzard president Johanna Faries has described the change as part of a more coordinated approach to planning across the company. Rather than reveal an ambitious project with no sense of when it might arrive, Blizzard now wants to attach target windows to major projects. Faries said the company has become more confident in doing so as its planning has improved. Inven Global’s interview with Faries covers that explanation.

There are two audiences for that approach. Players get something concrete to anticipate; developers, Faries says, still need enough time and space to deliver their best work. Her point is not that every distant date is certain, but that Blizzard believes it can make useful forecasts and wants to communicate them. A target year remains a plan for the future, not a guarantee.

What early announcements are meant to accomplish
Give players a clearer picture of what is ahead
Faries contrasted the new approach with the older “When it’s ready” reveal mindset. A striking announcement can generate excitement, but without a window players have little idea when they might play. Publishing a target year makes the slate more legible, even though the date is still subject to change.

Make room for community feedback
For Diablo 5, production lead Rod Fergusson said that beginning the conversation early gives the team an opportunity to hear what the community considers important and to prioritize accordingly. He linked that approach to feedback on features and quality-of-life elements in Diablo 4. In his Windows Central interview, Fergusson described the early reveal as a chance to listen while the project is still years away—not as a promise that every request will make it into the game.
Coordinate plans across franchises
The planning is also portfolio-wide, according to Faries. In an official Xbox podcast published February 13, 2026, she described teams thinking about what they want to do next year, five years from now, and potentially ten years out, with the aim of making those plans fit together. That helps explain why Blizzard may discuss several distant projects as part of a broader slate rather than treating each announcement as an isolated reveal.

StarCraft project lead Dan Hay said the team had already been working on the project, felt good about it, and wanted to give a long-waiting community an early glimpse of its story. He described 2030 as a year the team felt confident about and said putting the date in front of the team reinforced its commitment. These are Hay’s descriptions of the team’s intent, not an independent assessment of its schedule. GamesRadar+ interviewed Hay about the reveal.

The announcements show that Blizzard is willing to state target years for major projects and says it has planned with those windows in mind. They do not establish how likely either game is to ship on schedule. The available interviews explain Blizzard’s rationale and confidence; they do not independently evaluate development progress or schedule risk.
Nor do the interviews establish other possible motives such as sales goals, investor communications, recruitment, or competitive timing. Those may be questions people ask about any early announcement, but they are not demonstrated reasons for these particular dates in the reporting available here. The clearest explanation Blizzard has given is a combination of coordinated long-range planning, clearer expectations for players, development time, and an earlier opportunity to hear community feedback.
