A VS Code extension can put a short latency label beside a code range using editor decorations. But the display is the easy part: the extension must first decide where timings come from, what each number measures, and how a request is matched to the code that triggered it. “No dashboard” describes the interface, not whether data leaves the machine.
How can latency appear next to code in VS Code?
VS Code’s extension API supports editor decorations with text attachments before or after a decorated range. That makes an inline label such as “184 ms” technically plausible beside a matched line or expression. The API also documents debugger inline values, but those are shown at line ends by a debugger provider when debugging stops; they are not a general-purpose live API timing display. See the VS Code API Reference.

A decoration only renders information the extension already has. It does not, by itself, send requests, observe application traffic, or know which line caused a request. Those require separate data collection and source-mapping designs.
Choose what the latency number represents
There are at least three distinct product designs behind “API latency in VS Code.” They answer different questions, so an extension should identify its method in the UI and documentation rather than presenting all values as interchangeable.

| Approach | What it can tell a developer | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Active probe | How long a test request initiated by the extension took, such as after hovering an endpoint. | It measures the probe, not necessarily the application’s actual request, credentials, payload, or runtime conditions. |
| Runtime capture | How long an observed request from the running application took from the client’s perspective. | Coverage depends on the runtime and request APIs the recorder can see; unobserved clients produce no timing. |
| Instrumented telemetry | Request spans and related logs or metrics emitted by an application configured to send telemetry. | Requires application instrumentation and a defined telemetry path; it is not arbitrary capture of uninstrumented traffic. |
These are not competing ways to measure one identical quantity. An active probe can be useful for checking an endpoint on demand. Runtime capture reflects requests made by an application, if the extension observes that traffic. Instrumented traces can provide context across services, but only when the application emits them. No supplied evidence establishes a benchmark that ranks these approaches for speed or accuracy.
Map each request to the right source location
Displaying a timing beside code requires a defensible link between an observed request and a source range. A hover-triggered test can be associated with the URL under the pointer, but it is a test initiated from that text. Captured application traffic needs a correlation strategy—for example, an explicit association supplied by instrumentation or a supported call site. Without one, a URL string in a file may not be the code that actually issued a request.

Define what happens when a request cannot be mapped reliably. The extension could keep it in a separate request view or mark the source association as unavailable; it should not silently attach a plausible-looking number to unrelated code. Also consider repeated calls from one line, dynamically constructed URLs, generated code, and requests initiated in libraries or other processes. The available sources do not establish a universal source-mapping method for these cases.

“API calls” can include several HTTP clients and execution environments. A recorder that hooks one API may not observe another. For example, the Visual Studio Marketplace listing for Fetch Inspector describes recording outbound Node fetch traffic and says direct http.request calls—including axios’s default Node adapter—bypass its fetch recorder. That is a statement about that product’s fetch-only approach, not a limitation of every possible extension.

Other Marketplace listings illustrate different coverage models. API Hover Inspector describes issuing a live HTTP request when a developer hovers over an endpoint URL. OpenTelemetry for VS Code describes receiving OTLP logs, traces, and metrics from instrumented applications, with source-line links. These are publisher descriptions, not independent verification. The important distinction is whether a value comes from a probe, observed runtime traffic, or application-emitted telemetry.
Specify timing and privacy before promising “no cloud”
For each displayed value, state what interval is timed and where it is measured. A client-observed duration, a server-side span, and a probe’s elapsed time are not automatically equivalent. If the extension records status, headers, payloads, credentials, or history, disclose what is retained, where it is stored, and how users can clear it. If it opens network connections—for probes, telemetry, updates, or any other purpose—describe those connections separately from the location of the UI.

- Smart Auto Cutoff on Full Charge:Built-in smart sensor physically cuts power once battery hits 100%, instantly stopping charging current to extend your device’s battery life.
- 140W Ultra-Fast Charging:Boasts peak 140W power output to fully recharge smartphones, tablets and laptops in far less time; bid farewell to low-battery anxiety for work, travel and daily use.
- Dual Mode Switchable (Tap the device after power-on to switch modes):Blue Light Mode:-Ideal for screen-equipped devices like phones & tablets that stay powered on continuously; Green Light Mode:-Perfect for screenless electronics including earbuds, power banks, shavers & beauty devices
- Kind Reminder:When your phones, tablets, laptops and other screen-equipped gadgets show 100% battery on display, the battery is not truly fully charged. Devices will keep trickle charging to top up power. Our protector will only cut power automatically after the battery hits full capacity. If you turn on Blue Light Mode and leave the device idle, auto power-off will trigger in 10–50 minutes. For screenless devices under Green Light Mode, the unit will disconnect power in roughly 5 minutes. This delay is a normal working mechanism instead of product malfunction.
Microsoft warns in its Telemetry in Visual Studio Code documentation that third-party extensions may collect their own usage data and are not controlled by the telemetry.telemetryLevel setting. A credible local-only claim therefore needs extension-specific details: whether data is sent off-device, whether telemetry is optional, what request data is kept, and how credentials are treated. “No dashboard” alone does not establish any of those behaviors.

Fetch Inspector’s listing claims that it writes captured calls to local NDJSON, uploads nothing, makes no network requests of its own, and masks sensitive headers and body fields by default. OpenTelemetry for VS Code’s listing says its OTLP data is held in memory on the machine. Those statements describe the respective publishers’ products; they are not evidence about a new extension unless it implements and documents the same behavior.

A practical product definition
Before building the inline presentation, write down the extension’s data contract. This makes the feature understandable and testable without implying coverage or privacy that the implementation does not provide.
- Choose the source. State whether timings come from active test requests, a runtime recorder, or instrumented telemetry.
- Define the number. Name the timed interval and whether it is measured by the extension, the application, or a telemetry source.
- Describe coverage. List supported runtimes and request APIs, and explain what happens to traffic the extension cannot observe.
- Set mapping rules. Explain how a request is associated with a source range and how uncertain or missing matches are shown.
- Document data handling. Specify network connections, local storage, retention, credential handling, masking, and any optional telemetry.
- Then add the inline decoration. Use a concise label for the matched range and provide a way to inspect the timing’s source and context.
The differentiator can be placement: a timing shown beside relevant code may reduce the need to switch views. But other Marketplace extensions already describe ways to inspect API requests or telemetry within VS Code. The meaningful distinction is not simply “in the editor”; it is whether the extension clearly explains what the number measures, which calls it covers, and why it belongs beside that code.
