BET surface-area results can vary because analysts may choose different portions of the same gas-adsorption data to fit. BETSI is software reported in 2022 as applying additional selection criteria to make that choice more consistent. It changes the analysis, not the underlying measurements.
What the BET method measures
The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) equation estimates a material’s surface area from gas-adsorption data. Introduced in 1938, it remains a widely used benchmark in research on porous materials. Researchers use BET surface area when studying activated carbons, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and other materials relevant to applications such as catalysis, carbon capture and water harvesting. Surface area is one material property, however; it does not by itself establish how well a material will perform in any of those applications.

Using the equation involves selecting a region of an adsorption isotherm—the data describing gas adsorption as pressure changes—and fitting the BET equation to that region. The calculated surface area depends on the selected range, so different choices can produce different values.
Why results can differ between laboratories
The challenge is not a newly discovered flaw in the materials or a change to the underlying adsorption measurements. It is the discretion involved in selecting the data used for the fit. The Rouquerol criteria were intended to standardize that selection, but Chemistry World’s 2022 account says ambiguity remained, and results could vary across research groups.

Reporting on a Cambridge-led effort, Chemistry World said the team compared results from more than 60 laboratories and found differences of up to fivefold in some cases. That figure describes certain reported cases, not a typical error rate or evidence that all BET results are wrong by that amount. The report references J. W. M. Osterrieth and coauthors’ 2022 paper in Advanced Materials (DOI: 10.1002/adma.202201502); the figures here are attributed to Chemistry World’s account.
What BETSI changes
The team led by David Fairén Jiménez at the University of Cambridge introduced additional criteria alongside the Rouquerol list and created BETSI to apply them. Rather than leaving the fitting-region choice to an individual analyst, the software applies the criteria to make the selection unambiguous, as described in the 2022 report.

This is an analytical change, not a new experiment: existing adsorption data can be reanalyzed with BETSI. The report describes the software as open-access, but does not establish its current version, present-day availability, or adoption by instrument makers.

When researchers use different fitting ranges, a surface-area value may be difficult to compare across laboratories even when the material and measured data are otherwise comparable. A more explicit selection procedure can make the analysis easier to reproduce and scrutinize. More consistent BET values could also help comparisons across studies and may be useful in computational or machine-learning models, but the 2022 report presents these as potential benefits, not demonstrated outcomes.

The key distinction is between measurement and interpretation: BETSI works on the data already collected, changing how the fitting region is selected and the surface area calculated. It does not retroactively make the original measurements identical or guarantee that every source of inter-laboratory variation disappears.
