Beryl’s distorted 3D appearance was deliberate. YAMATOWORKS reshaped his anatomy while staging a sword battle with Fissel so the final 2D image would carry a stronger pose and furious side-profile expression. The 3D model was a means to build the shot, not a literal preview of how Beryl should look in the finished image.
Why was Beryl’s 3D anatomy distorted?
In its 2 October 2026 report, 80 Level describes how YAMATOWORKS artists Ryo Tsunoda, Meiya Okuda, and Kaito Kobayashi adjusted Beryl’s anatomy during development of his sword battle with Fissel. The original anatomy did not produce the pose and angry side profile the scene needed, so the team squished and stretched the 3D character to make the intended expression work in the final 2D image.

That mismatch is the point: a shape that looks awkward in a 3D setup can help create a more readable or forceful image from the final viewing angle. The report says viewers would not see the character’s 3D distortions in the finished 2D result.

The YAMATOWORKS team used LightWave 3D to create the battle choreography. In this account, the software supported staging the action, while the anatomy adjustments helped achieve the pose and expression intended for the 2D image. The report presents this as an example of exaggerated anatomy in animation, not as evidence that the final image itself was supposed to look deformed.
