Photosynthesis and the Fermi Paradox: Could Alien Life Leave a Detectable Signal?

Photosynthesis offers a useful new angle on the search for extraterrestrial life: organisms that use light might alter a planet’s atmosphere or leave a distinctive pattern in its reflected light. Those patterns could be candidate biosignatures, not proof of life—and they do not solve the Fermi paradox. The key is to look beyond the familiar picture of green, oxygen-producing plants.

What does photosynthesis have to do with the Fermi paradox?

The Fermi paradox asks why, given the possibility of a vast number of worlds and civilizations, we have no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations. Photosynthesis does not answer that question directly. It suggests another way to look for life: rather than waiting for a civilization to communicate, astronomers could search for possible biological effects on a planet’s air or surface.

On Earth, photosynthetic organisms use light to power biological processes. Some release oxygen; pigmented organisms also absorb and reflect particular wavelengths. If a distant planet’s atmosphere or disk-averaged light showed an unusual pattern, that could motivate closer study. The observation would be an inference about possible biology, not a view of individual organisms or alien forests.

NASA Science’s “Living color: life on other worlds,” updated October 26, 2024, describes pigment diversity and the challenge of interpreting distant planets through their combined light. A 2026 white paper by Schwieterman and colleagues emphasizes that researchers are still at an early stage in predicting when an observation would indicate photosynthetic life.

How could astronomers look for photosynthetic life?

Two broad kinds of clue are relevant: gases in an atmosphere and wavelength patterns in light reflected from a planet’s surface. They answer different questions and have different blind spots.

Candidate clue What it measures What it could reveal Main limitation
Atmospheric oxygen A gas that oxygenic photosynthesis can produce A possible atmospheric-scale effect of oxygen-producing life Oxygen can also have non-biological sources, and photosynthesis need not produce an atmosphere with detectable oxygen. NASA Ames discusses these interpretive limits on its Exoplanet Characterization page, updated August 3, 2023.
Surface reflectance edge or pigment feature How a planet’s brightness changes across wavelengths A possible clue to pigmented surface organisms, including where oxygen is not abundant The signal depends on pigment, surface coverage, clouds and atmospheric filtering; minerals and other surfaces can complicate interpretation. NASA Science (October 26, 2024) and the 2026 white paper discuss these challenges.
Other biogenic gases Atmospheric products associated with biological metabolisms A way to broaden the search beyond oxygen Researchers still need to characterize production, atmospheric survival and detectability. NASA Ames (August 3, 2023) describes this work as ongoing.

Oxygen is useful, but not a universal requirement

Oxygenic photosynthesis releases oxygen, making atmospheric oxygen a possible biosignature in the right planetary context. But light-powered biological processes do not all release oxygen. Anoxygenic phototrophs can use light without producing it, so an oxygen-poor atmosphere would not by itself rule out photosynthesis.

There is also a timing problem when interpreting Earth as a template. NASA Ames notes that oxygenic photosynthesis biosignatures—atmospheric oxygen and the red edge—have been present for less than half of Earth’s history. The page cites geochemical evidence from Planavsky and colleagues (2014) that atmospheric oxygen may have remained at very low, likely undetectable levels until about 0.8 billion years ago. A planet can therefore host relevant biology without displaying the atmospheric signal an observer expects from modern Earth.

Surface light can carry clues even without an oxygen-rich atmosphere

A planet’s reflected light may contain features associated with pigments on its surface. The best-known Earth example is the vegetation red edge: a sharp increase in reflectance between visible red wavelengths and near-infrared light, associated with vegetation. It is a candidate surface clue, not a universal biological marker. Its detectability would depend on how much of the planet is covered by the relevant organisms, as well as clouds, the atmosphere and the observing instrument.

What is the vegetation red edge?

Earth vegetation absorbs much visible red light and reflects substantially more near-infrared light. The resulting step-like change in brightness across those wavelengths is called the vegetation red edge, or VRE. It is not a red band painted on a planet, nor does detecting any spectral edge automatically establish life. It is one reflectance pattern researchers can test against the planet’s other properties.

The VRE is specifically an Earth-based reference case. Pigments differ among organisms and environments, and a planet’s apparent spectrum is the combined signal from its surface, atmosphere and clouds. NASA’s 2024 overview also notes that some pigments serve purposes such as radiation protection rather than capturing energy. A pigment feature alone therefore does not prove photosynthesis—or even life.

Could alien plants be purple or black?

They could have colors unlike Earth’s familiar green, but no particular alien color is established. A photosynthetic organism’s useful light depends partly on the light reaching the surface, which is shaped by the host star and atmospheric filtering. NASA’s June 6, 2013 release, “NASA Predicts Non-Green Plants on Other Planets,” summarizes models in which photosynthetic colors could differ from Earth’s, including non-green or infrared-dominant possibilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The release discusses planets around M stars, which receive much less visible light but more infrared light than Earth receives from the Sun. That makes alternative pigments a reasonable subject for investigation; it is not evidence that life around M stars is purple, black or any other color. NASA Ames also notes that low visible-photon flux around cool M dwarfs could limit photosynthetic productivity and make oxygen buildup to detectable levels more difficult.

Even Earth’s biology shows that oxygenic photosynthesis is not confined to the common chlorophyll-a regime. NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies reported in February 2012 that the cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina uses chlorophyll d and can use light with wavelengths reaching 740 nanometers in the near infrared. NASA quoted scientist Nancy Y. Kiang describing chlorophyll d as extending the useful solar radiation for oxygenic photosynthesis by 18%. That figure concerns the potential wavelength range available to this Earth organism; it is not a prediction about extraterrestrial life.

Why would a possible signal need follow-up?

A biosignature is evidence that may be consistent with life, not a label that makes life certain. A non-biological process can mimic a biological signal (a false positive), while living organisms may leave no detectable signal (a false negative). NASA Ames calls for interpretation frameworks that account for both, and for the planetary and stellar context in which a signal appears.

  • For an atmospheric gas: ask whether non-biological processes could produce it and whether the planet’s environment could sustain the gas at an observable level.
  • For a surface feature: consider whether minerals or other nonliving materials could create a similar reflectance pattern, and whether clouds or atmospheric filtering obscure it.
  • For a missing signal: consider whether the organisms use a different metabolism or pigment, whether the relevant life is too sparse, or whether the planet’s conditions prevent the signal from building up or reaching an observer.

These are not just technical caveats. They determine what a telescope observation can actually establish. A candidate gas or reflectance feature would be a reason to test explanations, not a standalone confirmation of life.

Does photosynthesis solve the Fermi paradox?

No. The photosynthesis angle expands the search for possible signs of life beyond messages or technological activity, but it does not explain why no extraterrestrial civilization has been confirmed. Nor do the cited studies establish that photosynthetic life exists beyond Earth. The 2026 white paper identifies unresolved work on evolution, pigment diversity, ecology and whether biological activity could be detected at planetary scale. Until those questions are better constrained, photosynthesis is a promising framework for asking what to look for—not an answer to why we have not found it.
