Substantially, yes. A 2016 study identified a plausible additional route: benzaldehyde, a compound used in natural and artificial cherry flavour, can break down into benzene under heating conditions, particularly when vitamin C is present. That is distinct from the better-known pathway involving benzoate preservatives and vitamin C. The findings explain how benzene could form in some cherry-flavoured beverages; they do not show that every such drink contains it or explain every detection.
How can benzene form in a beverage?
Benzene is not an ingredient that must be added for it to appear in a drink. It can form through chemical reactions involving certain ingredients. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says low levels can form in some beverages that contain both benzoate salts and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or erythorbic acid. Heat and light can stimulate formation in that combination. FDA’s Q&A on benzene in beverages describes this established pathway.

Cherry-flavoured products raised a further question because food-control testing found benzene in some products that were not preserved with benzoic acid. The proposed explanation does not require benzoate preservative: it involves benzaldehyde, a component of cherry flavour.

In 2016, Christine Loch and colleagues reported experiments showing that benzaldehyde can degrade into benzene under heating, especially in the presence of ascorbic acid. Benzaldehyde and benzene are different compounds: the study proposed benzaldehyde as a possible precursor, not as another name for benzene.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The researchers also examined 170 authentic market beverages. In that sample, benzene content was correlated with the presence of benzaldehyde (r=0.61, p<0.0001). The study reported benzene detections up to 4.6 μg/L in cherry-flavoured products. These figures describe the study and its samples, not the prevalence or levels in drinks on sale today. The study abstract in PubMed identifies the article as “Benzaldehyde in cherry flavour as a precursor of benzene formation in beverages,” published in Food Chemistry in 2016.
Together, the model experiments and the market-sample correlation support benzaldehyde as an additional precursor pathway. They do not prove that this pathway caused every detected instance, that it is the only explanation, or that all cherry-flavoured drinks contain benzene.

How does this pathway differ from the established one?
| Pathway | Ingredients or conditions involved | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Benzoate pathway | Benzoate salts together with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or erythorbic acid; heat and light can stimulate formation. | FDA describes this as a known way benzene can form at low levels in some beverages. FDA Q&A |
| Cherry-flavour pathway | Benzaldehyde, a component of natural and artificial cherry flavour, can degrade under heating, particularly with ascorbic acid. | Model experiments and a correlation in 170 market beverages support benzaldehyde as a possible additional precursor. Loch et al., 2016 |
The distinction matters: finding no benzoate preservative does not rule out the benzaldehyde pathway, while the presence of cherry flavour alone does not establish that benzene has formed.

After receiving reports in 2005, the FDA tested almost 200 soft-drink and other beverage samples collected from 2005 through May 2007. Ten samples had benzene above 5 parts per billion (ppb). Nine contained both added benzoate salts and ascorbic acid; the tenth was a cranberry beverage with added ascorbic acid and natural benzoates. The FDA said manufacturers reformulated or discontinued the products it identified above 5 ppb; reformulated products in follow-up testing had levels below 1.5 ppb. These are historical findings about the products tested, not a current brand-by-brand assessment. The FDA Q&A and its consumer guidance describe the survey.

The FDA states that almost all samples in its survey had no detectable benzene or levels below 5 ppb, and that the levels found in beverages to date do not pose a safety concern to consumers. That assessment concerns the low levels found in the tested beverages; it does not mean benzene is harmless. FDA identifies benzene as a carcinogen.
Is 5 ppb a legal limit for soft drinks?
No. The 5 ppb maximum contaminant level applies to drinking water under the Environmental Protection Agency’s standard, and the FDA adopted that level for bottled water. The FDA says it has no benzene standard for beverages other than bottled water. So 5 ppb should not be described as a universal legal limit for soda or other soft drinks. FDA’s regulatory explanation and consumer guidance provide this distinction.

Could the benzene have formed during testing?
For one historically evaluated method, the FDA reported that its headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method did not generate benzene in tested samples during analysis. That result addresses a possible measurement-artifact concern for the evaluated method; it is not a guarantee about every analytical procedure. FDA’s 2006 analytical-method page describes the method.
