Solar PV Efficiency Monitoring: What to Measure and When to Inspect

To monitor solar PV efficiency, compare the array’s measured electrical output with the sunlight and operating conditions available to it. Energy totals alone cannot show whether a system is underperforming: irradiance, temperature, shading, downtime, clipping, curtailment, and grid limits all affect production. Monitoring can flag unusual patterns and alarms, but it cannot by itself prove which component has failed.

What PV efficiency monitoring can tell you

Monitoring puts electrical production in context. NREL identifies plane-of-array irradiance, ambient and module temperature, array voltage, current and power, plus grid and load measurements as useful monitoring quantities. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes performance ratio as actual production compared with modeled production based on measured solar-resource and temperature data over the selected period, accounting for system age. It is a normalized performance comparison, not a fault code.

For larger plants, useful reporting can also include plane-of-array insolation, energy delivered, estimated expected power, availability, inverter and balance-of-system efficiency, and alarms. A low-output interval may warrant investigation, but first account for conditions that can limit production without indicating an equipment failure.

  • Weather and temperature: Available sunlight and module temperature influence output.
  • Operational limits: Clipping, interconnection limits, called-for curtailment, and control actions can constrain delivery.
  • Availability: Downtime affects energy totals and should be distinguished from reduced output while operating.

See the NREL presentation on monitoring system performance, the 2018 NREL and PV O&M Best Practices Working Group guide, and the DOE’s guidance on operating and maintaining an existing PV system.

Which readings and reports matter

A useful monitoring setup pairs production data with measurements or estimates of the solar resource and relevant temperatures. The right level of detail depends on the question: a site-wide energy total can show a broad change, while inverter- or string-level readings can help distinguish whether a pattern is localized. Reporting is more useful when it also makes alarms, availability, expected power, and operating constraints visible.

  • Solar resource: Plane-of-array irradiance or insolation helps describe the sunlight reaching the array’s plane.
  • Temperature: Module and ambient temperature add context for interpreting electrical output.
  • Electrical output: Energy and power, with voltage and current where available, show what the system delivered.
  • Equipment and grid status: Inverter status, alarms, grid delivery, and load measurements help identify outages or operating constraints.
  • Comparison measures: Performance ratio, availability, and estimated expected power summarize different aspects of performance; none establishes root cause by itself.

When comparing monitoring arrangements, check the time resolution and whether short events are visible; which irradiance and temperature measurements are included; sensor installation, accuracy, calibration, and maintenance; access to alarms and exportable readings; whether reporting accounts for clipping, curtailment, and availability; and whether inverter- or string-level diagnosis is supported. NREL emphasizes that monitoring depends on sensor and model quality, transparent measurement protocols, and clear data presentation.

How to respond to an unusual production pattern

  1. Confirm the data is credible. Check whether readings are missing, implausible, or inconsistent, and whether the irradiance, temperature, and electrical sensors are working as expected. Sensor or data-feed problems can imitate an array problem.
  2. Compare like with like. Review output against the solar resource and temperatures for the same period. Consider operating status and whether comparable inverters or strings show a different pattern.
  3. Check constraints and alarms. Review inverter messages and whether clipping, interconnection limits, curtailment, grid conditions, or control actions explain the shortfall. DOE guidance also recommends checking production meters and inverter error messages as part of operation and maintenance.
  4. Arrange targeted inspection if the pattern remains unresolved. A site-wide production or availability issue may be investigated first through monitoring and inverter data. If the uncertainty is at string or module level, qualified personnel can use electrical testing or thermal imaging as secondary checks.

NREL describes manual electrical tests such as open-circuit voltage, operating current, and field I-V curve tracing, as well as aerial thermal-imaging inspections. These methods complement routine monitoring; they are not proof that a particular component has failed without appropriate interpretation. Measurements depend on the combined accuracy of irradiance, temperature, and electrical sensors, and field I-V tracer accuracy is limited.

Why sensor quality and maintenance affect the conclusion

Errors in the measurements used to normalize output can distort the performance picture. NREL’s 2011 monitoring presentation identifies plane-of-array irradiance as the dominant error source in determining system power and stresses sensor quality, professional installation, and regular calibration. It describes pyranometers and reference cells as irradiance-measurement options, with uncertainty depending on the instrument, its calibration, and installation. A handheld irradiance meter may help check a monitoring instrument, but it does not replace calibrated site instrumentation or independently establish system efficiency.

When monitoring is not enough

Routine monitoring may not reveal every string- or module-level fault. Electrical field tests and thermal imaging can provide additional evidence when a monitored pattern persists or the available readings cannot resolve it. Thermal imagery can locate temperature patterns that merit investigation, but an image alone does not prove a specific defect; inspection and validated processing are needed to identify and locate module defects.

Standards and degradation figures need context

NREL’s 2011 presentation contains historical sampling and inspection recommendations; they should not be treated as universal current requirements. The current IEC 61724-1 edition-specific requirements are not established here. For contractual or compliance decisions, check the applicable standard edition, equipment specifications, and jurisdiction.

NREL’s 2024 Utility-Scale PV Annual Technology Baseline uses 0.7% per year as a baseline annual degradation-rate assumption. That is a modeling assumption for the baseline, not a universal field threshold for deciding whether a particular system is faulty. See the 2024 NREL Utility-Scale PV Annual Technology Baseline.
