Usually, wkhtmltoimage either did not load the font stylesheet or font file, could not access a local font, cannot see the font in its runtime environment, or captured the page before a delayed load finished. A page rendering successfully does not prove its separate font-file request succeeded. Check those causes in order before blaming the renderer.
How to diagnose missing fonts in wkhtmltoimage
Begin with a small reproduction so each check tells you something. Record the exact command, input type (URL or local file), operating system, and output of wkhtmltoimage --version. Create a minimal page with one font and a short line containing the characters that are missing. A normal browser can provide a useful comparison, but it may use a different renderer and installed fonts.

- Check whether the font stylesheet loads.
- Check whether the font file referenced by that stylesheet loads.
- If the page or font is local, verify its path and file access.
- Check that the renderer’s runtime can discover the font and that it contains the missing glyphs.
- Test a delay only if the page adds styles or loads resources asynchronously.
- If the minimal case still fails, compare builds and inspect warnings before concluding it is a renderer defect.
Check remote font loading in two stages
A hosted web font commonly involves two requests: first the page retrieves a stylesheet, then it retrieves a font file referenced by that CSS. Google Fonts describes this sequence and notes that its API tailors the stylesheet to the requesting user agent. A successful page load alone does not establish that either font request succeeded. Inspect the exact stylesheet URL and the font-file URL it supplies, then confirm that the renderer can reach both.

If you use Google Fonts, the CSS returned for one user agent may differ from what a different renderer requests. Verify the CSS and file URLs in the environment where the capture runs rather than assuming the browser’s successful result applies to wkhtmltoimage. Google Fonts technical considerations (last updated July 6, 2026) explain the stylesheet and font download sequence.

Check local font paths and permissions
For local HTML or an @font-face rule that points to a local file, resolve the font path relative to the page and check that the process running wkhtmltoimage can read it. A path that works from a browser, a developer account, or a different working directory may not work for the capture process.
The command reference documents --allow <path> to permit a specified path, and --enable-local-file-access and --disable-local-file-access to control local-file access. Prefer allowing only the directory needed rather than broadly enabling access where a narrow path is sufficient. Check the options supported by your installed build; command-line references establish available controls, not which settings your invocation currently uses. See the wkhtmltoimage command reference.
Check fonts inside the runtime environment
A font installed on a workstation may be absent from the user account, container, or server image that runs the renderer. Check that the font is installed and discoverable in that same environment, not merely on the machine from which you launch the job.

Qt’s Linux font documentation says Qt normally uses fontconfig to access installed system fonts and describes a fallback font database when fontconfig is unavailable. This is useful general guidance for Linux deployments, not a guarantee about every older Qt WebKit or wkhtmltoimage build. The Qt documentation cited here is for Qt 6.8; use it as a diagnostic lead rather than a compatibility promise for your binary. Qt 6.8 Linux requirements provides the relevant font-system context.
Check family names, font style, size, and glyph coverage
When the font file appears to load but the text is still substituted or incomplete, check that the CSS family name matches the family declared by @font-face, and that the requested weight and style are available. Then check the font’s character coverage: a font may not contain the particular Unicode characters that appear missing. Qt’s documentation discusses font formats supported through FreeType and notes that fonts do not necessarily contain every Unicode character. Its Qt WebKit reference also documents configurable font families and minimum sizes; those details support these checks but do not establish the cause of any one failure.
Use --minimum-font-size <int> only when the text is present but too small to read. It is not a remedy for a missing font request, inaccessible file, or absent glyph. See Qt 6.8 Linux requirements and the Qt WebKit settings reference.

Use a delay and JavaScript diagnostics only for timing questions
If JavaScript adds font styles or the page starts relevant work after its initial load, test a short post-load wait with --javascript-delay. For example:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitcheswkhtmltoimage --javascript-delay 1000 input.html output.png
The value is milliseconds; this example is a diagnostic starting point, not a universal wait time. The command reference also documents --debug-javascript, which can expose JavaScript diagnostics:
wkhtmltoimage --debug-javascript input.html output.png
More waiting can help only if relevant work is still pending. It cannot repair a blocked or incorrect font URL, local-file access restrictions, or a font missing from the runtime. Likewise, --load-error-handling <handler> changes behavior when page loads fail; it does not make a failed font request succeed. Consult the command reference and your build’s settings reference for the available options.

Interpret the result before changing more settings
- Stylesheet or font-file request fails: investigate the URL, network access, and response for that specific resource. A longer delay is not a fix for an inaccessible resource.
- Local file cannot be read: verify the resolved path, process permissions, and local-file access settings; allow only the required directory when possible.
- Font is unavailable to the process: install or expose it to the same user or container that runs the renderer, then repeat the minimal test.
- Only some characters are missing: check glyph coverage and the actual font file being used.
- Text appears only after a wait: investigate asynchronous page behavior and use a measured delay if necessary.
- Minimal test still fails after these checks: compare the exact binary and environment with another build, and inspect its output for warnings. Historical Qt WebKit issue reports document past font-loading problems, but do not prove that an unspecified current package has the same defect. See the archived WebKit issue as historical context only.
There is no single compatibility rule that covers every wkhtmltoimage binary, operating system, page, and invocation. If you report or investigate a reproducible issue, include the version, operating system, minimal HTML, command, whether the input is a URL or local file, and relevant load or JavaScript warnings.

If the goal is to get a screenshot rather than diagnose a local renderer, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
