How to Fix wkhtmltoimage SSL Handshake Errors

An SSL warning is not a diagnosis. Identify the failing request and distinguish certificate trust, library compatibility, subresource failures, and HTTP access errors.

“SSL handshake error” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First capture the full error output, the exact wkhtmltoimage version and build, your operating system, the target URL, and whether the main page or one of its external resources failed. Those details determine whether to investigate certificate trust, the TLS runtime, a subresource, or an HTTP access problem. The wkhtmltopdf project repository is archived, so treat proposed fixes as environment-specific checks—not as a promise that a universal update exists. Project repository; release history.

Start by identifying exactly what failed

Save the complete standard error output and the command you ran before changing libraries, certificates, or flags. Record the target URL and whether the failure concerns the page itself or a request made by the page. The messages “Warning: SSL error ignored,” “QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSL_load_error_strings,” and “Failed loading page … UnknownNetworkError” have appeared in reports, but they do not all describe the same underlying failure. Issue #3945.

  1. Run wkhtmltoimage --version and save the full output. Note whether it says “with patched qt.”
  2. Record the operating system and distribution, how the binary was installed, and any container or deployment environment it runs in.
  3. Save the exact command line and full stderr, including warnings printed before the final error.
  4. Note the requested URL, whether redirects occur, and whether the main document or a CSS, script, image, font, iframe, or other dependency appears to fail.

Build and packaging matter: issue reports concern different versions and circumstances, and the project’s release history includes historical OpenSSL-related changes. These records do not establish that every build has the same TLS behavior or that a library replacement is always the right fix. Release history.

Separate a TLS handshake problem from other failures

Main document or subresource

A page can load its HTML while a remote dependency fails, or the main page itself can fail before rendering begins. Reproduce the problem with the main document, then examine remote dependencies individually. A project issue reports CDN resource failures alongside SSL warnings and an overall network error; inspect each failing resource’s hostname, redirects, certificate chain, and access response rather than assuming the page URL is the only relevant endpoint. Issue #3200.

#1 Best Overall

Certificate trust or TLS runtime

Certificate validation and compatibility between the executable and its TLS libraries are different branches. If output points to certificate verification, check the trust store visible to the process. If it reports unresolved OpenSSL symbols or cannot load SSL functions, investigate the libraries the exact binary loads and whether they are compatible with that build. Issue #3945 records a 0.12.5 report involving unresolved OpenSSL symbols; it is evidence to check runtime compatibility, not proof that installing a different OpenSSL version will solve every failure. Issue #3945.

TLS negotiation or HTTP/access denial

A TLS failure happens during secure-connection setup. A response such as 403 Forbidden, an access-denied page, or a redirect that requires authorization is an HTTP or access-control result, not by itself evidence of a failed handshake. A report for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 with patched Qt includes a 403 response; check the server, proxy, redirects, credentials, and access policy on that branch. Issue #4444.

Check the TLS libraries used by this build

When the error mentions symbols such as SSL_load_error_strings, determine which Qt and OpenSSL libraries the executable actually loads. Compare those dependencies with the binary’s package source and build expectations; a system may contain multiple library versions, and the version installed globally is not necessarily the one used by the process.

The project release history records historical OpenSSL 1.1 support patches. Separately, Qt’s Linux and Windows deployment guidance for Qt 5.14 says that release requires OpenSSL 1.1.1 and that the libraries are not automatically deployed. That Qt 5.14 detail is specific to that Qt release and those platform instructions; do not apply it as a universal requirement for every wkhtmltoimage package or operating system. wkhtmltopdf release history; Qt 5.14 SSL support.

  • Identify the package source and build variant, including whether Qt is patched.
  • Inspect the runtime library dependencies using tools appropriate to your operating system, then verify that the process can find the required libraries.
  • Compare the loaded libraries with the package’s build expectations. Avoid swapping shared libraries or creating compatibility symlinks without confirming that the binary and library versions are compatible.
  • Retest with the same URL and command after any environment change, and retain the before-and-after stderr.

Check certificate-chain and CA-store access

If logs point to certificate verification, confirm that the site presents a valid certificate chain and that the process can read the expected CA certificates. Test from the same host, container, user account, and network path as wkhtmltoimage; a certificate store available on your workstation may be missing or unreadable in a container or service environment.

Qt documents configuration of additional CA certificates and says Unix root certificates can be loaded on demand. Check the applicable Qt configuration and the trust-store contents for the environment running the capture. Fix the chain or trust configuration rather than treating skipped verification as the normal remedy. Qt QSslConfiguration documentation; Qt SSL documentation.

Isolate external resources and access responses

  1. Try the main document without optional external resources, or use a minimal local HTML file, to determine whether basic rendering works.
  2. Request each suspected CSS, script, image, font, or iframe URL separately from the same environment. Check the final URL after redirects and inspect the server’s response.
  3. If a dependency fails but the document loads, investigate that resource host’s certificate chain, redirect behavior, and access requirements.
  4. If the response is 403 or access denied, check authorization, proxy configuration, server policy, and whether the request is being redirected to a protected page.

A resource-level network failure can affect the rendered result even when the main document is reachable. Conversely, an HTTP denial does not establish that the TLS handshake failed.

Use SSL-error bypasses only as a temporary diagnostic

Do not make disabled certificate verification a routine production fix. Qt’s “Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Classes” documentation warns: “Use QSslSocket::ignoreSslErrors() with caution as it will create security risks in your application.” If your build or wrapper offers a way to ignore SSL errors, use it only briefly to test whether certificate validation is the failing stage. Restore verification immediately and correct the trust-store, certificate-chain, or runtime problem. Qt Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Classes.

Troubleshoot by the message you see

Symptom What it suggests Next check
QSslSocket: cannot resolve SSL_load_error_strings or another unresolved SSL symbol Possible mismatch between the binary and the OpenSSL libraries it loads; the message alone does not identify the correct replacement. Confirm the exact build and inspect its runtime library dependencies and package expectations. Issue #3945.
Certificate verification or chain warning Possible invalid/incomplete server chain, missing CA certificates, or inaccessible trust configuration. Check the server chain and the CA store visible to the process; verify Qt’s CA configuration. Qt QSslConfiguration.
SSL warning plus a failing CDN, font, or other asset The problematic request may be a subresource rather than the main page. Test the resource URL and its redirects independently from the same environment. Issue #3200.
403, forbidden, or access denied An HTTP/server, proxy, or authorization response; not proof of a failed TLS handshake. Inspect access rules, credentials, proxy behavior, and redirects. Issue #4444.
UnknownNetworkError or “Failed loading page” A broad network-load failure that needs the preceding log lines and request context to classify. Capture full stderr and determine whether the failed URL is the document or a dependency. Issue #3200.

When a reliable render is still unavailable

The wkhtmltopdf repository is archived, and its release notes and issue reports are historical evidence rather than a guarantee of current support for a particular modern TLS server. If a target site still cannot be rendered reliably, preserve the build and platform details, and consider whether fetching resources locally or evaluating a maintained alternative fits your security, deployment, and rendering requirements. No replacement is established as a universal fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “Warning: SSL error ignored” mean the certificate problem is fixed?

No. It indicates that an SSL error was ignored; it does not establish that the connection was safely validated. Check the certificate and trust configuration, and do not leave verification bypassed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I assume an archived wkhtmltoimage build supports a site’s current TLS setup?

No. The project’s release history and issue reports do not establish current compatibility with every server. Verify behavior with your exact build, platform, and target.
