For a real-estate tour channel that needs camera inputs, property details, maps, title cards, branded overlays and prerecorded clips, OBS Studio is the more practical default. Its scenes and sources are built for composing a visual program, and its media sources can loop local videos or playlists. FFmpeg is worth considering when your show is already a defined, script-driven media pipeline and you are comfortable designing and supervising it. Neither encoder alone guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: your source material, computer, upload connection and outage-monitoring plan matter too.
How should you choose between OBS and FFmpeg?
Choose based on how the tour is produced, not on an assumption that one encoder is universally more reliable.

| Decision | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Visual tour layout | Strong fit when you need scenes combining video devices, images, text and media. OBS documents these source types in its Overview Guide and Sources Guide. | Could be used as part of an encoding pipeline, but the sources available here do not establish an equivalent visual production workflow. |
| Looping prepared tours | A Media Source can loop a local video. A VLC Video source can loop a playlist, provided VLC is installed and compatible with OBS’s bitness; see the Media Sources guide. | A script-driven loop may fit an automated pipeline, but validate the specific input and loop behavior before relying on it. |
| Operating style | GUI controls suit an operator who changes scenes or checks the composition while the stream runs. | Best considered when you already have a command-line production pipeline and can supervise its processes. A detailed technical comparison is not established by the sources cited here. |
| Reliability | Reconnect controls can reduce manual work after a disconnect, but do not guarantee continuous service. | Automation does not by itself prove uninterrupted YouTube ingest or recovery. |
Use OBS for a composed property program
Real-estate tours often need more than a video playing full-screen: a host may switch between a walkthrough, a map, a property-information card and a branded holding screen. OBS’s documented scene-and-source model maps to that workflow. It is also the easier of the two to configure through a visible interface when an operator needs to make changes during a broadcast.
Use FFmpeg only when the pipeline is already defined
FFmpeg can be a reasonable candidate for a production that is already organized around scripted inputs and encoding. The available official-source evidence does not support publishing a general command recipe or claiming FFmpeg is inherently lighter, more stable or more reliable. Test the exact input, codec, destination and restart behavior you intend to use before putting it on an unattended channel.

Can OBS loop real-estate tour videos overnight?
Yes. OBS’s Media Source can repeat a local video file, which works for a single prepared tour. For a sequence of tours, its VLC Video source can play and loop a playlist, but VLC must be installed and its bitness must be compatible with OBS. The precise steps can vary by OBS version and operating system, so confirm the labels in your installed build.
- Prepare the program. Decide whether the channel will run one continuous tour file or a playlist. Include any property details, maps, branding and transitions in the program you intend to broadcast.
- Build the scene in OBS. Add the required sources—such as capture devices, images, text and media—and arrange them in the intended order. Create separate scenes if the operator will switch between layouts.
- Add looping media. Add a Media Source for a single local video and enable its loop option. For a playlist, add VLC Video, select the playlist and enable looping. Install VLC first if you use that source.
- Set the stream destination and encoder. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube and enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in a public document, recording or command shared with others.
- Set output to match the tour and connection. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you can sustain. For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of a particular viewer experience; use the bitrate table for other codecs and formats.
- Use YouTube’s ingest guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no greater than four seconds. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Check that the codec and chosen OBS workflow support your selected configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- Test before the real broadcast. Run a test with movement and audio similar to the property tour. Watch the YouTube stream-health status and messages, and inspect the loop boundary, audio continuity, slate or branding, and behavior after restarting OBS or the media source. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement.
- Plan for failure. OBS documents an automatic reconnect option in its Overview Guide. Enable and test it, then decide who or what will detect a prolonged outage and restore the feed. Reconnect is a recovery control, not an uptime promise.
What bitrate and settings should a 24/7 tour stream use?
Start with the intended resolution and frame rate, then make sure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with room for normal variation. YouTube specifically recommends a speed test and choosing a quality that results in a reliable stream for the available connection. A fast result from one speed test does not establish that a home or office connection will remain stable all day.

- 1080p30 H.264: YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 14 Mbps.
- 1080p60 H.264: YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 17 Mbps.
- Keyframes: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol and rate control: use RTMPS and CBR in line with YouTube’s guidance.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for the stated RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
Those figures are not universal settings for every codec or output. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes recommended and minimum rates and provides separate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; select the row for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate you will use. Keep the stream within the stable capacity of the upload connection rather than choosing a higher bitrate simply because the encoder allows it.

What can make a 24/7 YouTube tour stream go offline?
A working encoder is only one part of the broadcast chain. A property stream can fail because the source stops, the computer or application exits, the upload connection drops, the stream key or destination is wrong, or the YouTube ingest reports a problem. A loop setting addresses repetition of media; it does not monitor every part of that chain.

Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health shows unstable connection or dropped frames | Whether the chosen bitrate is sustainable on the upload connection; compare against a speed test and representative-load test. | Reduce output quality or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, then test again while monitoring YouTube stream health. |
| Tour video stops or shows a blank source | Whether the file or playlist remains accessible and whether the loop/source behaves correctly after a restart. | Reopen the media source, verify the local file path or playlist, and test the full loop rather than only a short segment. |
| Stream fails to connect | YouTube destination, current stream key, ingest settings and selected codec. | Verify the stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, keep it private, and align encoder settings with YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Connection drops and does not return | OBS reconnect setting, network recovery and whether the application is still running. | Enable and test OBS automatic reconnect, then assign a person or monitoring process to identify a prolonged outage and restore the stream. |
| Playlist boundary has silence, a gap or abrupt change | Transition between the end and start of files, embedded audio levels and the branding/slate sequence. | Review the entire boundary in a test broadcast and revise the media or playlist order before leaving it unattended. |
No single reconnect setting establishes who will detect a long outage, whether the computer will restart after a crash, or how YouTube will behave for every channel configuration. YouTube Live duration, archive and restart behavior should be checked in the channel’s current Live Control Room guidance rather than assumed.
