Why Are Videos Blurry When Sent Through iMessage?

Blurry videos in iMessage usually come from the message route, carrier limits, iPhone compression, low-quality previews, or a reduced export resolution. Here is how to find which one applies.

A video that looks sharp on your iPhone can arrive soft on someone else’s, even when both of you are using iMessage. In most cases the cause is not the iMessage service deciding to degrade the video. It is a combination of three things: the message route (blue or green bubble), a carrier or device setting that sends a smaller copy, and a lower export resolution chosen before the video was sent. Apple’s documentation confirms that iPhone may compress photo and video attachments when necessary, and it does not publish one universal compression ratio, maximum resolution, or size threshold for iMessage videos. That means you can identify the likely cause and fix it, but you cannot predict an exact quality loss in advance.

Start with the bubble color

The bubble color tells you which kind of message was sent, and that determines what the message can carry.

  • Blue bubble (iMessage): Apple says iMessage supports high-resolution photos and videos. If a blue-bubble video looks soft, the problem is usually one of the causes below rather than the message type itself.
  • Green bubble (SMS, MMS, or RCS): These messages travel over carrier-based channels. Their capabilities and availability vary by carrier, device, and conversation setup, so a video sent this way is more likely to be reduced in size or quality.

Check the bubble before you troubleshoot anything else. A green bubble inside a group that includes an Android user, for example, is not an iMessage conversation, and the video is subject to the limits of the other route.

Why the video looks soft

Carrier size limits and iPhone compression

Apple’s iPhone Messages guide, “Take and edit photos or videos in Messages on iPhone,” states: “Your carrier may set size limits for attachments; iPhone may compress photo and video attachments when necessary.” Two points follow from that sentence. First, a carrier can set an attachment size limit that applies to your line. Second, iPhone can compress the attachment itself when it needs to. Apple does not state how much compression occurs, so the amount of softness you see can range from barely noticeable to obvious. A longer clip is more likely to hit a size limit than a short one.

Low-quality photo previews

Settings can also send a smaller version of media. In Settings > Apps > Messages, look for Send Low Quality Photo Previews. According to Apple, when Low Data Mode is on, only a low-quality preview is sent in the context of this setting. The recipient may see a small or soft preview first, with the full media arriving later. If that is what happened, the video is not permanently degraded, but the copy the recipient sees first will look worse than the original. Allow time for the full file to finish arriving on a stable connection before judging the result.

A lower export resolution chosen before sending

Some people reduce a video’s resolution before sending it to keep the file small. This is a legitimate way to shrink a file, but it lowers detail at the source. Once a 1080p video has been exported at 540p, no later step can restore the lost detail. Compressing a video reduces its file size; it does not make a soft video sharper. If you need a clear result, send the highest resolution your recipient’s route can handle.

How much smaller a video becomes at each resolution

Apple Support’s guide “Compress a video on iPhone” gives approximate file sizes for a one-minute export. These are Apple’s examples for the 2026 guide, not measured outcomes for every clip, and Apple notes that lower-resolution export can reduce video quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Export resolution Approximate size for one minute Notes from Apple’s guide
1080p 70–105 MB Default iPhone camera and iMovie export settings
720p 19–27 MB Lower resolution; reduces video quality
540p 12–16 MB Lower resolution; reduces video quality
360p 6–9 MB Lowest listed resolution; reduces video quality

The gap is large. A one-minute 1080p clip at the default settings can be several times the size of the same minute at 720p, which is why a sender who is only trying to get a message through may choose a lower resolution without realizing how much detail is lost.

Troubleshooting steps

Work through these checks in order. Each one rules out a cause before you move to the next.

  1. Confirm the bubble color. If the message is green, the video is traveling over SMS, MMS, or RCS. Ask the recipient to confirm whether they are using iMessage, and send again from a blue-bubble conversation if possible.
  2. Check Send Low Quality Photo Previews. On the sender’s iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Messages and review the setting. Also check whether Low Data Mode is on in the Wi-Fi or cellular settings for the connection in use. If the recipient saw only a small preview, wait for the full file to arrive.
  3. Check the original file’s size and resolution. Open the video in Photos and confirm its resolution and length. A long clip is more likely to be compressed. If the sender exported at a lower resolution to reduce size, the softness started there.
  4. Compare the original and the received copy. Open the original in Photos and compare it with the version the recipient got. If the original already looks soft, the problem happened during recording or export. If the original is sharp and the received copy is soft, the cause is in transit or in a setting described above.
  5. Switch to a file-sharing method for long videos. If the clip is long and must stay sharp, use one of the methods in the next section instead of sending it as a standard message attachment.

Apple’s guide confirms that compression may occur, but it does not describe a test that proves a specific quality loss or a threshold that triggers it. Step 4 is the most practical way to tell whether the loss happened before or after sending.

Sending a long video without a message attachment

Apple lists three options for long iPhone videos: AirDrop, iCloud, and Mail Drop. They differ in who can receive the file and how far away the recipient can be.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method Best for Recipient requirement File size and quality
AirDrop Nearby devices; uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Recipient must be close enough and able to accept AirDrop File size and quality limits not stated in Apple’s cited guide
iCloud Remote recipients where a share link is convenient Recipient must be able to open the shared link Quality handling not stated in Apple’s cited guide
Mail Drop Remote recipients using email Recipient must be able to receive the email attachment Quality handling not stated in Apple’s cited guide

Apple’s sources do not establish that every method preserves identical quality in all circumstances. Before relying on one, send a short test clip and check it on the recipient’s device. Also confirm whether the recipient wants the original file or a copy they can view on their phone. If you need the original file and its metadata, a shared-link method is usually a better choice than a message attachment, but the exact handling should be confirmed in Apple’s current documentation for the method you choose.

When you export a video to shrink it, do it only when a smaller file is more important than sharpness. For an important clip, use a file-sharing method and keep the original resolution.
