A foldable, airless wheel developed by KAIST (the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) could let a small lunar rover descend into a lava tube on its own wheels, without being lowered by tether from a larger platform. The wheel packs down to 230 millimeters and expands to 500 millimeters. KAIST reports that the prototype handled 200-millimeter obstacles and slopes above 20 degrees in simulated lunar soil. It is a laboratory prototype. The reported results do not show it operating on the Moon, and KAIST describes integration into flight-grade micro-rovers as future work.
Why lava tubes are hard to reach
Lunar pits and lava tubes are scientifically attractive. According to KAIST’s February 19, 2026 announcement, they may preserve geological evidence and could offer shelter from temperature extremes, cosmic radiation and micrometeorite impacts. The difficulty is getting in. An entrance can involve steep or near-vertical descents, loose soil and irregular rocks, and a rover has to survive the drop and then move across that ground.

KAIST says earlier concepts often lowered small rovers by tether from a larger platform. That adds deployment steps and a risk of collision between the platform and the rover. The KAIST wheel is meant to deform and absorb impact, so that a compact rover could descend without a crane or tether. This is a proposed capability. The reported work does not include a lunar mission that uses it.

“Origami-inspired” describes the design logic, not the material. The wheel is not made of paper. Its structure uses elastic metal strips arranged in a spiral, reciprocal pattern, a geometry the team links to origami folding and to the reciprocal structure of Leonardo da Vinci’s bridge designs. Because the strips coil, the wheel can be compacted for storage and then expanded for movement.

The reported geometry has two states:
- Stowed: 230 mm diameter.
- Deployed: 500 mm diameter, roughly 2.2 times the stowed diameter.
Diameter is the only size figure KAIST gives in the sources available for this article, so it says nothing about stowed volume or mass.
What the reported tests show
The table lists each figure with its source and what it does and does not establish. None of these numbers come from operation on the lunar surface.

| Measure | Reported value | Source and date | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folded diameter | 230 mm | KAIST report, February 19, 2026 | Stowed size of the prototype wheel. |
| Deployed diameter | 500 mm | KAIST report, February 19, 2026 | Working size of the prototype wheel. |
| Obstacle traversal | 200-mm obstacles | KAIST report, February 19, 2026 | Prototype passed obstacles of this height in the reported tests. Obstacle shape and test setup are not stated in the sources reviewed. |
| Slope performance | Slopes above 20 degrees | KAIST report, February 19, 2026 | Measured in simulated lunar soil, not in lava-tube terrain. |
| Temperature | Up to 423 K (about 150 °C) | KAIST report, February 19, 2026 | KAIST reports the wheel kept working under vacuum at this temperature. Test duration is not stated. |
| Drop-impact simulation | Resilience to impacts simulating a 100-meter descent under lunar gravity | Paper abstract, indexed on PubMed, 2025 record | A simulated impact test described in the abstract. KAIST’s public account describes impact testing but does not give this height, so treat 100 m as the abstract’s figure. |
Limits of the evidence
- No lunar operation is reported. The wheel has been tested as a prototype, not on the Moon.
- No independent validation or flight heritage is established by these results.
- The drop test is a simulation. It does not show that the wheel survived an actual lunar fall.
- Lava-tube floors are not covered. The sources do not report traction or mobility tests on lava-tube floors, on steep rock faces, or in dust-rich lunar conditions beyond the simulated soil.
Can a rover reach a lava tube with this wheel?
The wheel is designed to make a tether-free descent plausible for a compact rover. The reported work does not show a rover entering a lava tube, and the descent test is a simulation, so the capability remains proposed. Entry would also depend on the rover’s overall design, its power and navigation systems, and the mission profile, none of which the KAIST announcement describes in detail.

NASA’s 2026 wheel challenge
NASA Johnson Space Center’s August 17, 2026 report on the Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge describes prototype wheel concepts tested on a 45-kilogram ground rover at Johnson Space Center. NASA says later tests could examine lunar-like dust, vacuum and extreme temperatures. That challenge did not test the KAIST wheel. It is useful context because it shows that speed, load capacity, durability and terrain performance can pull wheel designs in different directions.
JPL’s ATHLETE wheel effort
JPL’s project page describes a non-pneumatic wheel for the ATHLETE rover, with NASA Glenn and Michelin involved in planned evaluation. The page does not show a date. This is a separate project from the KAIST origami-inspired design.

A fair comparison would look at stowed size against deployed mobility, impact absorption, traction on loose soil and rock, slope capability, environmental durability, deployment complexity and mission maturity. No head-to-head test data for these designs is available, so this article does not rank them.
Development status and next steps
KAIST’s February 19, 2026 announcement credits the Unmanned Exploration Laboratory, KARI and KASI with the work. The next step it names is integrating the wheel into flight-grade micro-rovers. KAIST also mentions Korea’s planned 2032 lunar missions as context. That date is not a confirmed deployment date for this wheel.

For readers tracking the topic, the practical milestones to watch are a flight-grade integration, tests in lunar-like conditions beyond simulated soil, and any independent test data on descent and terrain performance. Until those appear, the wheel is best understood as a promising mobility concept for lava-tube access, not a demonstrated capability.
