French high-school students are protesting what they describe as poor school conditions: staff shortages, crowded classes, deteriorating facilities, long schedules and frustration with the higher-education application system. Demonstrations and blockades that began in the Paris region spread to schools elsewhere in France. Some sites saw clashes and damage, while other students focused on school conditions and peaceful protest. Figures reported through October 2, 2026, show major disruption and injuries, but do not establish how many schools were closed nationwide on October 3.
Why are students protesting?
Students interviewed by news organizations cited too few teachers and other staff, worn or inadequate school buildings, crowded classes, long days and dissatisfaction with the higher-education application process. These accounts describe students’ reported experiences; they are not a comprehensive national audit of staffing or school conditions.

The Union Syndicale Lycéenne called for the movement to spread nationwide alongside a broader public-sector strike. Demonstrations and blockades had begun in the Paris region in the week before September 30, then appeared in other cities.

AFP quoted Juan, a student at Montbello high school in Lille, saying: “We don’t condone vandalism; we came to defend our rights because we have horrendous schedules — we work 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and that’s not right,” The comment reflects his account, not necessarily the position of every student taking part.

How many schools were affected or closed?
Available figures describe different snapshots and measures of disruption. “Affected” does not mean every school was closed: it can include strikes, protests or blockades.

How many people were injured, and who was hurt?
Reported injury counts cover different groups and time periods. They should not be added together as if they were a single tally.

Have the protests been peaceful or violent?
Reports describe varied events rather than one uniform kind of protest. Some students demonstrated or blocked school entrances over school conditions; at some locations, clashes, fires, vandalism and projectiles were reported. Police used tear gas and other crowd-control measures in some encounters. Incidents at particular sites do not establish that all demonstrations or participants were violent.

The prime minister convened a crisis meeting as the unrest spread. Authorities said police should clear blockades that prevented access to schools and act against violence and vandalism. Education Minister Geffray said classes should move online where blockades or damage made it unsafe to receive students in person. He also said, as quoted by the Associated Press, “Violence will not deprive our students of their fundamental right to education,”

Geffray’s message about returning students to class was also reported by AFP: “It is imperative that our students be able to return to class -—especially those who are currently prevented from doing so,” These comments describe the government’s stated position; they do not establish that all affected schools had reopened or resumed in-person teaching.
The unrest has also become part of political debate amid discussion of the proposed 2027 budget and the approaching presidential campaign. Political claims about responsibility for the protests are distinct from the reported student grievances and should not be treated as established explanations for why students joined.
