Cloud storage is a prominent example, but it is not the only kind of software-mediated storage. These conveniences can reduce the need to own and operate storage infrastructure; they do not guarantee lower costs, better performance, or security without careful management.
What makes software storage solutions appealing?
The key difference is how storage is requested and managed. In its 2011 definition, NIST describes cloud computing as on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable resources, including storage, that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or provider interaction. That model helps explain why storage managed through software can be easier to adjust than capacity that requires purchasing and installing additional hardware. It is an explanation of the model, not evidence that it causes adoption in every case. NIST’s cloud definition identifies five essential characteristics, three service models, and four deployment models.

Capacity can change with demand
Google Cloud and AWS describe their storage services as allowing capacity to scale with an organization’s needs. That flexibility can be useful when demand grows, fluctuates, or is difficult to predict. It does not establish that cloud storage will cost less: charges depend on use and service terms, and a workload’s performance and data-movement needs matter too. Google Cloud’s explanation and AWS’s explanation are provider descriptions, not independent cost comparisons.

Access can cross locations
Network-connected storage can let people and applications reach data from different locations, subject to the service, network, and access controls in place. Google Cloud describes access over internet or private network connections. This can make sharing and collaboration more convenient, though the evidence available here does not compare collaboration outcomes among storage systems.

Less infrastructure may need to be owned directly
Google Cloud and AWS present cloud storage as a way to reduce the need to buy, maintain, and operate storage infrastructure or data centers. Google Cloud also frames the shift as moving some spending from capital expenditure toward operating expenditure. The costs do not disappear: operating expenses still depend on how much storage and related services are used, the service terms, and the work required to manage the environment.
A software layer can simplify management
Storage software can present underlying storage technologies through a more consistent service or interface. NIST’s storage guidance describes this abstraction over background storage technologies. The abstraction can make infrastructure easier to use, but it does not remove the need to configure, monitor, and govern it.

How widely are these services used?
Available adoption figures show substantial use of cloud-related services, but they measure different things and should not be treated as storage-only statistics.

When does a software or cloud storage approach fit?
The right choice depends on the workload and the organization’s responsibilities, not popularity alone. Cloud, on-premises, and hybrid approaches each involve trade-offs; the sources cited here do not establish neutral provider-by-provider performance or pricing rankings.
| Decision area | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Access | Whether people or applications need to reach data across locations or networks. |
| Capacity | Whether demand is stable, growing, seasonal, or unpredictable. |
| Workload and performance | Required latency and throughput, plus application dependencies. No neutral comparative benchmark is established by the sources cited here. |
| Cost | Purchase and operating costs, usage-based charges, data movement, and ongoing administration—not just the initial price. |
| Control and management | Who configures, monitors, patches, and governs the storage environment. |
| Security and compliance | Required identity and access controls, encryption, isolation, and data-protection measures. |
| Recovery | Whether backup copies exist and whether restoration has been assured. |
NIST’s cloud computing recommendations address both opportunities and risks and call for considering them in relation to a system’s needs.

What are the risks and limits?
Software abstraction can make storage easier to access, but it can also make the full environment more complex to manage. NIST warns that greater storage-management complexity can lead to configuration errors and associated security threats. Its SP 800-209 storage guidance covers protections including data protection, isolation, restoration assurance, and encryption.
