To change Microphone Mode on an iPhone, open Control Center while using a supported call or recording app, tap that app’s controls, then choose a mode under Audio & Video. The choice applies only to that app and stays in effect there until you change it.
What each iPhone Microphone Mode does
Choose a mode according to what you want the other participants or recording to pick up:

| Mode | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Uses standard voice processing. | You want the ordinary audio treatment. |
| Voice Isolation | Prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise. | Your voice should be easier to hear over sounds around you. |
| Wide Spectrum | Leaves ambient sounds unfiltered. | You want listeners to hear your surroundings as well as your voice, such as music or a group. |
| Automatic | Selects a mode automatically. Apple says it uses Voice Isolation for calls through the receiver and Standard for speakerphone calls. | You want the iPhone to choose based on the call setup. |
These are processing choices, not microphone mute controls. FaceTime has a separate control for muting your microphone. Apple describes the modes but does not publish a quantified noise-reduction result, so there is no supported percentage or measured improvement to expect.

Which modes work in calls and recordings?
Apple’s support guide, published November 7, 2025, gives these minimum iOS versions and boundaries. The feature must also be supported by the particular app and context.
| Use case | Availability stated by Apple |
|---|---|
| FaceTime or certain third-party apps | Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum require iOS 15 or later. |
| Phone calls | Voice Isolation requires iOS 16.4 or later. Wide Spectrum is not available for phone calls. |
| Automatic Mic Mode | Requires iOS 18 or later. |
| Audio or video recording apps, including Voice Memos or certain third-party apps | Voice Isolation requires iOS 26 or later. |
Apple lists iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later as supported for Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum. That device support does not guarantee the option will appear in every app or activity.

Why a Mic Mode change affects only one app
Mic Mode is app-specific rather than a single global microphone switch. A selection made for one app does not automatically change the mode in another. Apple says the selection persists for the app until you choose a different mode. If you switch apps, open Control Center from the app you are using and check its controls there.

Moreover, it can also with laptop and tablet, which is convenient for content creators to make recordings with various devices for podcasting, vlogging, live streaming and interviewing
- Longer Receiver: The interface of the receiver for the mini microphone has been upgraded to be longer for phone connection. The rechargeable battery carries you from morning vlogs to evening livestreams, so you can focus on the content instead of watching the battery indicator.
What to check when a mode is missing
- Check the active app’s controls. Open Control Center during the call or recording and tap the controls for that app.
- Check the activity. A mode may be available for a FaceTime or supported third-party call but not for a phone call or recording.
- Check the iOS requirement. For example, Automatic requires iOS 18 or later; Voice Isolation during phone calls requires iOS 16.4 or later.
- Check the iPhone model. Apple lists iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later for Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum.
- Do not expect Wide Spectrum on a phone call. Apple says it is not available in that context.
Audio input is a separate setting
Choosing a Mic Mode changes how supported software processes microphone audio; selecting an audio input determines which supported microphone or input the app uses. Apple’s iPhone guide describes choosing an audio input in Control Center for supported apps and websites. With iOS 26.1, Apple also says input gain can be adjusted for supported wired microphones and devices, including EarPods with a USB-C connector. These input controls are separate from the choice between Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, Standard, and Automatic.
Apple’s video-call recording guidance notes that Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum do not apply to a Local Capture recording; that recording can be edited afterward.
