Most often, the screenshot’s pixel scale does not match the output you expect. Playwright can save one pixel per CSS pixel or one per device pixel; check the screenshot’s scale and the browser context’s deviceScaleFactor before changing anything else.
How screenshot scale affects sharpness and dimensions
CSS pixels describe the page layout; device pixels describe the physical-pixel scale being emulated. With scale: 'css', Playwright produces one output pixel per CSS pixel. With scale: 'device', it produces one output pixel per device pixel, so a high-DPI capture can have more pixels than the CSS viewport dimensions.

The page screenshot API documents device as the default. For predictable output, choose the scale explicitly:

Check the context’s device scale factor
deviceScaleFactor is separate from viewport width and height. It defaults to 1; Playwright’s high-DPI emulation example uses 2. Set both values to match the scenario you intend to reproduce:

});Then capture with the explicit scale that matches your goal. For example, with the context above, scale: 'device' produces output at device-pixel scale, while scale: 'css' keeps output dimensions at CSS-pixel scale. The Playwright emulation guide covers viewport and device emulation.

If the problem is in a visual regression test
Screenshot assertions are a separate API from page.screenshot(). Their documented default scale is css, unlike the page screenshot API’s documented device default. If you compare an assertion against an image captured with device scale, explicitly align the scale settings rather than assuming the defaults match. See screenshot assertions.

- Compare dimensions. Check the image’s pixel dimensions against the CSS viewport. A device-scale capture can be larger than the viewport when the context uses a high device scale factor.
- Set screenshot scale explicitly. Use
devicefor device-pixel output orcssfor CSS-pixel output. - Verify emulation. Check the context’s
deviceScaleFactorand viewport independently; make sure each matches the display scenario you are reproducing. - For visual tests, inspect assertion settings separately. The assertion API’s default is CSS scale, so align it with the image and comparison you intend to use.
- If scale and dimensions are right, check rendering consistency. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baseline and current captures in as consistent an environment as practical. See the visual comparisons guide.
A larger pixel count does not by itself establish that an image will look sharper after it is resized or displayed elsewhere. Check the actual output at the size and in the context where you plan to use it.

Does a high-DPI screenshot require a high-DPI monitor?
The documented remedy is to configure Playwright’s screenshot scale and emulated device scale factor; a physical display upgrade is not required for those settings.
