Test them in a plain text field, compare the built-in keyboard with a separate keyboard, and match any settings checks to what the keys actually do. This helps distinguish a keyboard-specific problem from an input setting before you try model-specific troubleshooting.
What happens when you press the keys?
Open a plain text field and press C, V, B, N and M one at a time. Note whether each key produces no response, the wrong character, a number, repeated characters or multiple characters. The response is more useful diagnostically than the fact that the affected keys are adjacent: manufacturer guidance addresses keyboard symptoms such as unresponsive, delayed or unexpected output, but does not establish one cause for this exact five-key pattern. Does a separate keyboard work?
If you have another keyboard, connect it and test the same letters in the same text field. If the separate keyboard works on that computer but the built-in keyboard does not, the problem may be limited to the built-in keyboard or its connection. That comparison points to what to investigate next; it does not prove which component has failed. HP also recommends testing a keyboard on another computer when troubleshooting unexpected behavior. Which settings should you check?
Choose checks based on the symptom you recorded; no single setting is a universal fix for five nonworking keys.
- Letters produce numbers: Some laptops have an embedded numeric keypad among the letter keys. Check whether it is enabled and inspect NumLock. ASUS and MSI include this kind of check for numeric output from letter keys. ASUS instructions · MSI instructions
- Wrong letters or symbols appear: Verify the active input language and keyboard layout in your operating system. A different layout can change what a keystroke produces. ASUS and MSI both include input-language or layout checks in their troubleshooting guidance.
- Response is delayed or keys seem insensitive: On a supported Windows device, check whether Filter Keys is enabled. ASUS identifies this accessibility setting as a possible reason for delayed keyboard response. See ASUS’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance.
- Nothing happens: A language or layout change is less likely to explain a key that produces no response at all. Use the separate-keyboard comparison, then follow the computer maker’s guidance for your exact model.
When should you try driver troubleshooting?
Follow instructions for your computer’s manufacturer and exact model rather than applying generic driver steps. ASUS’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance includes updating BIOS, Windows packages and drivers, then uninstalling keyboard devices in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can install the driver again. These procedures are manufacturer-specific. Confirm that the instructions apply to your model and operating-system version before proceeding. Do not change BIOS settings casually or use third-party driver-finder utilities.
When is repair the next step?
If a separate keyboard works but the built-in keys continue to fail after relevant settings checks and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps, contact the computer maker or a qualified repair provider. The computer’s exact model is needed to identify a compatible replacement keyboard; do not order a part based only on the affected letters. Lenovo’s guidance, for example, applies to specified IdeaPad and ThinkPad systems running Windows 10 or 11, not to every laptop. Check Lenovo’s applicable support guidance.

Using a separate keyboard in the meantime
A separate keyboard can help with the comparison test and provide temporary input if the built-in one is unreliable. Choose a connection type and physical layout that suit your computer and the language you use. It is a workaround and diagnostic aid, not a repair for a faulty built-in keyboard.
