Why Are Images Missing in a Headless Chrome Screenshot?

Headless Chrome may capture before images load, miss untriggered lazy images, or block failed requests. Diagnose the element, network activity, and wait condition.

Images are usually missing because Chrome captured the page before they loaded, lazy-loaded images were never brought near the viewport, or an image request failed or was blocked. Check the image element and its network request, trigger lazy loading when needed, and wait for the image itself—not just a generic page-load event—before taking the screenshot. Without the page, browser version, capture code, and network log, there is no single cause to identify.

Why images go missing in headless Chrome

The screenshot happens too early

A page can still be loading when a screenshot is taken. Chrome’s command-line screenshot --timeout sets a maximum wait before capture; it does not prove that every image has loaded. In automation, a navigation event is only a starting point: wait for the content that must appear in the capture.

Lazy loading has not been triggered

Images marked loading="lazy" may not be requested until they approach the viewport. They may therefore still be unavailable at the window load event. A full-page screenshot does not necessarily make the page request every offscreen image first.

The request failed or was blocked

An incorrect source, server error, access requirement, unsupported or corrupt image, or automation request-interception rule can prevent an image from loading. For example, the Chrome for Developers server-rendering example blocks image requests as an optimization for markup-only output; similar interception in a screenshot script will omit those images.

Diagnose the missing image in order

  1. Find the image in the page. In DevTools or your automation context, inspect the expected element’s src and currentSrc. JavaScript may assign the URL after initial HTML parsing. If the asset is a CSS background or drawn into a canvas, an img query will not find it; inspect the relevant style or rendering code.
  2. Check whether the image is usable. Record loading, complete, and naturalWidth. A zero naturalWidth means intrinsic image data is unavailable. Do not treat complete as proof of success: it can also be true when the image is broken. Pair element state with the request result.
  3. Check the network request. In DevTools Network, filter for image requests and inspect their status and errors. In automation, log request and response events. If no request was sent, investigate source assignment, lazy-load triggering, or interception. If it failed, check the URL, response, access or referrer requirements, and browser network error.
  4. Review interception rules. If Puppeteer request interception is enabled, make sure image requests are continued rather than aborted. A handler intended to block large resources can silently remove the very content the screenshot needs.
  5. Trigger lazy loading. Scroll the target image or its region into the visual viewport, allow the request to begin, and wait for that image to load and decode before capture. Repeat for relevant image regions on long pages.
  6. Check what the screenshot includes. Confirm the image lies within the requested viewport or full-page capture area and that responsive layout or CSS has not hidden or clipped it.

Wait for image readiness, not just network idle

Puppeteer’s networkidle0 condition means there have been 500 ms with no network requests. That quiet period is not a guarantee that lazy images have been requested, decoded, or painted. The Chrome for Developers guide specifically cautions that pages with lazy loading can need more time. networkidle2 is also a navigation lifecycle condition, not proof that a particular image is visible.

For a known page, the strongest approach is to wait for the target element and image state your screenshot requires. A useful browser-side check is:

const result = await page.$eval('img.hero', img => ({
  src: img.src,
  currentSrc: img.currentSrc,
  loading: img.loading,
  complete: img.complete,
  naturalWidth: img.naturalWidth
}));
console.log(result);

For a lazy image, first bring it into view; then wait until it is complete and has nonzero intrinsic width. If the image element is not present yet, wait for the page-specific selector or application-ready signal that creates it. Avoid using an arbitrary sleep as the only readiness check: it may be too short on a slow page and waste time on a fast one.

Choose a capture wait that matches the job

Method What it gives you What it does not guarantee
Chrome CLI screenshot with --timeout A simple maximum wait before capture. That images have loaded; capture can occur while loading continues.
Puppeteer navigation wait, such as networkidle2 A programmatic starting point after navigation. That lazy images were requested or that a specific image is ready.
Page-specific element and image-state wait Control over the exact content required in the screenshot. It requires you to know the target selector or ready condition for that page.

Use navigation waits to get the page into a useful state, then add a condition for the actual image or image region. Puppeteer’s screenshot documentation demonstrates taking a screenshot after navigation with networkidle2; the additional image checks matter when lazy loading or application-specific rendering is involved.

Interpret what your checks show

  • No image element: the page may not have reached the client-rendered state that creates it, or the selector may be wrong.
  • Element exists, but source is empty or unexpected: inspect the site’s data and source-selection logic.
  • Source exists, but no request appears: investigate lazy-load triggers, JavaScript source assignment, and interception.
  • Request failed: verify the URL, server response, access and referrer requirements, and browser error details. Invalid or empty sources, corrupted data, and unsupported formats are among documented image-error cases.
  • Request succeeded, but the screenshot is still blank: check decode/readiness, dimensions, CSS visibility and layout, clipping, and capture boundaries. The precise display issue depends on the page.
  • All images disappear when interception is on: inspect the request handler for rules that abort image resources.

For a one-request screenshot, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its API removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does `networkidle0` wait for every image?

No. It means 500 ms without network requests; a lazy image that has not been requested is not covered by that condition.

Why is `img.complete` true but the image missing?

`complete` can also be true for a broken image. Check `naturalWidth` and the network request as well.
