A mismatch may come from screenshot output scale and deviceScaleFactor, not from a page that rendered incorrectly. Set scale: 'css' as a diagnostic when you expect one output pixel per CSS pixel, then compare viewport-only and full-page captures separately.
Check screenshot pixels against the CSS viewport
Log the viewport width and height, the browser context’s deviceScaleFactor, and the options passed to the failing page.screenshot() call. Then inspect the saved PNG’s pixel width and height. Playwright’s Page API reference defines scale: 'css' as one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel; scale: 'device' produces one pixel per device pixel. With a high-DPI device scale factor, the resulting image can therefore be twice as large or more than the CSS viewport dimensions.

Those larger pixel dimensions do not by themselves prove the page layout is distorted. The image may instead be displayed or compared downstream as though its pixels represented CSS pixels. Check the dimensions and how the artifact is embedded or viewed before changing page CSS.
Use CSS-pixel output as a scale diagnostic
If the artifact should have CSS-pixel dimensions, try explicitly setting scale: 'css'. This is a configuration example, not a universal fix:

Keep the viewport, page, browser engine, and other capture settings fixed while comparing scale modes.
Isolate full-page capture from viewport capture
Playwright’s fullPage: true captures the entire scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. If only full-page images look wrong, compare a viewport-only screenshot with a full-page screenshot using the same page, viewport, device scale factor, and browser engine. Record the browser engine and version as part of the comparison.

A historical Playwright issue about a WebKit-on-Linux full-page capture described an image-dimension limit in a particular case; a maintainer suggested scale: 'css' as a workaround for that report. It is not evidence of a universal current WebKit problem. Treat an engine-specific failure as case-specific and reproduce it with the version and page involved.

Compare one capture setting at a time
- Record the page URL, viewport width and height, context
deviceScaleFactor, browser engine and version, and screenshot options. - Save a viewport-only image with the current settings and note its pixel dimensions.
- Change only the screenshot scale to
'css'and compare the dimensions and appearance. - Restore the original scale, then change only
fullPageto compare viewport and full-scrollable-page captures. - If the issue remains, reproduce it on the affected page and browser while inspecting the page’s CSS and layout, transforms, image metadata, and the code that embeds or displays the artifact.
Do not attribute a difference to scaling if the compared screenshots also use different viewport or emulated device settings. The Playwright Screenshots documentation summarizes viewport, element, full-page, and scale capture modes.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- Image dimensions are larger than the viewport, but the content proportions look right: check
deviceScaleFactorand whether the screenshot usesscale: 'device'. Tryscale: 'css'if CSS-pixel dimensions are desired. - Only the full-page image is affected: compare it with a viewport-only capture and record the browser engine and version. A full-page-only problem needs its own reproduction; it does not establish a general scaling fault.
- Only one page is affected: inspect that page’s layout and CSS transforms, and verify that the displayed artifact is not being resized by the viewer or embedding code.
- The image still appears wrong after scale and capture mode are isolated: check the screenshot’s image metadata and preserve the exact viewport, device scale factor, browser version, and capture options in a minimal reproduction before assigning a cause.

Does a screenshot with more pixels than the viewport mean Playwright stretched the page?
No. Device-pixel output can have more pixels than the CSS viewport while preserving the rendered proportions.
