Files that do not appear in File Explorer are not necessarily deleted. First check that you are viewing the right location, then rule out hidden items, incomplete search indexing, and OneDrive’s online-only or account states. Try the reversible visibility and search checks before taking recovery actions that could affect newer files.
1. Check the folder path and navigation pane
Look at the address bar at the top of File Explorer and confirm the drive and folder you opened. Browse the expected parent folder, and check Home or Quick access as well as the drive you expected to use.

Windows 11’s folder layout differs from older versions. In Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos are available in Home or Quick access by default. Not seeing one under This PC does not by itself mean its contents are gone. Microsoft explains the Windows 11 File Explorer layout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Turn on hidden items
In File Explorer, select View > Show > Hidden items. If the missing file appears, it was hidden rather than deleted. This setting changes what Explorer displays and can be turned off again from the same menu. Microsoft’s instructions for viewing hidden files.

3. Search by name or file type
Search from the likely parent folder using a distinctive part of the file or folder name. If you know the extension, try a wildcard such as *.doc or *.mp3. Microsoft notes that files can sometimes move during a Windows upgrade, so searching beyond the folder currently open can help locate them. See Microsoft’s guidance on finding lost files.
When a result appears, right-click it and select Open file location. That reveals the result’s actual path, so you can tell whether the item moved or was saved somewhere unexpected.

4. Check Windows Search indexing
Search can miss files when their folders are outside the indexed locations. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Search to review indexing mode and locations. Classic mode indexes common folders by default; Enhanced mode indexes all user folders and files and may use more system resources. If appropriate, add the folder you are trying to search to indexed locations. Microsoft describes Windows Search indexing.

If results remain incomplete, open Advanced indexing options > Advanced > Troubleshoot search and indexing. Microsoft says building an index can take up to a couple of hours, so a newly changed indexing setup may not produce complete results immediately. The lost-files guidance includes the search troubleshooter.

5. Check OneDrive online and sync status
If the expected folder is part of OneDrive, search for the item on OneDrive.com and confirm you are signed in to the account that contains it. The local File Explorer view is not the only place to check: OneDrive files may be online-only, locally available, or configured to remain on the device. An online-only item can be absent from local storage without the cloud copy being deleted. Microsoft’s OneDrive missing-files guidance and Files On-Demand details explain these states.
6. Look in OneDrive Recycle bin and Personal Vault
If the file is not in OneDrive’s normal file list, check the OneDrive Recycle bin. Also check Personal Vault: its files do not appear in ordinary search results, and you may need to unlock the Vault to view them. Microsoft lists these checks for missing OneDrive files.

If OneDrive offers a restore to an earlier point, review the restore details before proceeding. Availability depends on eligibility, and restoring can send files created after that point to the Recycle bin.
7. Investigate a OneDrive sync-pending folder carefully
If a OneDrive folder shows Sync pending but no visible item explains it, enable hidden items using View > Show > Hidden items. Microsoft identifies a hidden file as one possible cause. See Microsoft’s OneDrive sync and missing-file advice.

Do not delete an arbitrary temporary file just because it looks unfamiliar. Microsoft cautions that moving, renaming, or deleting a temporary file may affect the program that created it; leave it alone unless you know it is no longer in use. Microsoft explains temporary-file handling.
8. Verify the account and storage location before recovery
If these checks do not locate the item, confirm the Windows or OneDrive account, the expected drive, and the folder where the file should have been saved. Determine whether it was stored locally or in OneDrive before choosing a recovery path; use the corresponding Recycle bin and official recovery options if deletion is plausible.
A missing item can have causes beyond a display or search issue, including account access or storage problems. The steps above cannot diagnose every device or organizational-policy condition, and they do not guarantee recovery. If you suspect a drive fault or managed-device restriction, seek support for that specific device or account rather than deleting files or changing storage settings at random.
