Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To reconnect a smart thermostat after a reset, use the Wi-Fi setup steps for its exact brand and model—there is no universal sequence. A network reset, a factory reset, and reconnecting the thermostat to its app are different actions, so don’t factory-reset it again by default. You’ll usually need the thermostat, its companion app if required, and your current Wi-Fi name and password.
Before you reconnect, identify the reset and the model
Check the thermostat’s brand and model or generation, then open the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact device. The reset type matters: a Wi-Fi reset clears network settings; a factory reset can restore broader device settings; and app enrollment links the thermostat to an account. Follow the model’s instructions rather than assuming one reset serves all three purposes.

- Have the thermostat physically available. Google says users need to be near supported newer Nest thermostats when updating Wi-Fi in the app.
- Know the current network name and password. If your router or Wi-Fi credentials changed, use the new details.
- Have the correct companion app and account ready if the model’s setup route uses them.
Use the setup route for your thermostat
| Thermostat | Where to reconnect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and Nest Thermostat | Google Home app; stay near the thermostat | Choose the thermostat, then open Settings > Device information > Wi-Fi and follow the prompts to select the new network and enter its password. |
| Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen or earlier) and Nest Thermostat E | On the thermostat | Open Settings > Network, select the new network, and enter its password. |
| ecobee models covered by its Wi-Fi setup guide | On the thermostat | Open Main Menu and Wi-Fi settings, make sure Wi-Fi Radio is enabled, select the network, enter its password, and wait for the success message. Wi-Fi band support varies by model; check the guide for your specific thermostat. |
| Honeywell Home / Resideo T5, T5+, and T6 Pro WiFi | Resideo app, if registered; otherwise device setup | If the thermostat is registered in the app, select it, open its settings, choose “Reset WiFi,” and follow the prompts. If it does not appear or that option is unavailable, choose “Add a New Device” or the plus button and complete setup. |
Official instructions: Google Nest and Home Wi-Fi setup, ecobee Wi-Fi setup and troubleshooting, and Honeywell Home / Resideo Wi-Fi reset for T5, T5+, and T6 Pro WiFi.
Check that the connection is complete
Look for a successful connection message on the thermostat, then check whether it appears online in the appropriate app. A thermostat may connect to Wi-Fi while remaining unavailable in the app; if that happens, address app enrollment separately rather than repeatedly changing the network password.

If the thermostat still will not connect
- Recheck the Wi-Fi name and password, then follow the model-specific setup steps again.
- Confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled on the thermostat. For ecobee, the guide specifically directs users to check that Wi-Fi Radio is on.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility and troubleshooting guidance for the exact model. For ecobee, do not assume 5 GHz support across the product range.
- Check the router or access point configuration if the thermostat cannot join the network. Google suggests temporarily disabling Wi-Fi range extenders as one Nest troubleshooting test; it is a diagnostic step, not a general recommendation to add equipment.
- If the thermostat joins Wi-Fi but remains offline in the app, use the manufacturer’s app setup or device-enrollment instructions.
For other brands or generations, use the manufacturer’s official support page rather than applying another model’s menu path. Google’s general guidance says that changing Wi-Fi credentials or replacing a router means reconnecting Nest or Home devices to the new network; the steps vary by device.
