130nm chips remain useful because many electronic circuits do not need the density of the newest process nodes. For analog, mixed-signal, power-management and other specialized devices, a mature process may better fit the required voltage, precision, performance and cost. Moving to a smaller node is not automatically an improvement.
What does “130nm” mean?
130nm names a semiconductor process generation, not a complete measurement of every transistor feature. Implementations vary between manufacturers, so the label alone does not specify the exact capabilities of a chip or process.

Samsung says its own 130nm process entered mass production in 2002. That date describes Samsung’s process, not a universal start date for every 130nm technology. Samsung’s logic-node portfolio also lists 130nm among its process options.

Many circuits do not need maximum transistor density
A chip’s process is chosen to meet its job, not to achieve the smallest possible feature size. Texas Instruments says foundational analog and embedded semiconductors in the 45nm-to-130nm range are common in everyday electronics. TI senior vice president Hagop Kozanian has said that most semiconductors in many electronic systems do not need the smallest geometries. TI’s discussion of foundational semiconductors places these devices in systems ranging from vehicles and industrial equipment to computers and phones.

Smaller is not always better for analog
Analog circuits must handle real-world signals, and their design priorities can differ from those of dense digital logic. TI says that in many analog designs, reducing the node can degrade performance and increase price. The relevant question is whether a smaller process improves the finished device, not whether it offers more transistors per area. TI’s overview of analog design describes the tradeoffs involved.
Mature processes can offer options tailored to specific devices
Foundries and fabrication facilities list specialized capabilities and uses for 130nm-class processes. Samsung’s portfolio connects 130nm with categories including microcontrollers, embedded flash, BCD, power-management ICs, display drivers, IoT and wearables. Its automotive service page describes 130nm BCD power-IC capability for automotive applications. Samsung’s process portfolio and automotive process offering are examples of specific provider offerings, not evidence that every device in those categories uses 130nm.

These are examples of applications supported by that facility’s process, not a claim about all 130nm manufacturing. How should a chip designer compare process nodes?
The best fit depends on the circuit and its requirements. TI describes the design balance in terms of cost, performance, power, precision and voltage; the process must also provide the features the application needs.

- Circuit type and process features: Identify whether the device is analog, mixed-signal, embedded or another specialized design, and whether the process offers the required capabilities.
- Performance and precision: Consider whether a smaller node actually improves the circuit’s behavior and accuracy.
- Voltage and power: Check that the process suits the device’s operating-voltage and power requirements.
- Cost: Compare the complete design and manufacturing fit; the available sources do not establish a quantified cost advantage for 130nm.
- End-product benefit: Ask whether a move to a newer node makes the product better enough to justify redesigning it.
TI’s account of analog technology explains why these considerations can favor a process that is not the newest or smallest. TI’s analog technology discussion supports treating process choice as a set of tradeoffs rather than a race to shrink.

Provider descriptions establish that 130nm capabilities and application categories remain listed, but they do not establish the node’s current share of global semiconductor production or its worldwide output volume. It is accurate to say that 130nm remains a useful option for some designs; the sources do not support a market-wide production statistic.
