How to use a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen without losing trackpad shortcuts: keep using the MacBook’s built-in trackpad and keyboard alongside a compatible external touchscreen. Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications list a built-in Force Touch trackpad and external-display support, but do not establish that the built-in screen accepts touch or that a particular external touchscreen works with macOS.
Can you use a touchscreen with a MacBook Pro?
MacBook Pro’s built-in display is not documented by Apple as a touchscreen. You can connect an external display, but video output alone does not confirm that its touch input will work with your Mac. Before buying one, ask the monitor maker to confirm touch compatibility with your exact MacBook Pro model and macOS version. Apple’s display connection and configuration limits vary by MacBook Pro model; those limits describe display output, not touch support. If the external display supports touch with your setup, touching it does not require you to stop using the MacBook’s trackpad or keyboard. Apple describes the keyboard, mouse, and trackpad as Mac’s primary input tools, and notes that keyboard shortcuts can perform actions otherwise done with a trackpad, mouse, or another device (Apple Support: Use your keyboard, mouse, and trackpad on Mac).

Keep using these trackpad gestures
Apple’s built-in gestures remain available while you use another display. To review them, open Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad. In the gesture panels, you can view animations and change or turn off available options. Gestures and instructions may vary with the Mac and macOS version (Apple Support: Use Multi-Touch gestures on your Mac).

Shortcuts depend on the app and the action available there. Apple documents them as an alternative way to perform many actions normally done with a pointing device; they do not make an incompatible touchscreen work.
