What the Mac Studio costs now
Apple announced the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, with availability beginning September 22. Apple’s U.S. starting prices are $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra. These are entry prices; the cost of a particular configuration depends on the options selected. A display and external storage are separate purchases, not part of the Mac Studio starting price. Apple’s announcement also describes support for multiple displays, Thunderbolt 5 peripherals and external storage.

The figures above are Apple’s announced specifications and starting prices, not independent performance measurements. The Ultra costs $3,000 more at the starting-price level; whether its extra capacity is useful depends on the work being run.
Why Apple raised Mac prices in 2026
In June 2026, MacRumors reported that Apple increased the U.S. starting price of the then-current M4 Max Mac Studio from $1,999 to $2,499, a $500 rise. The M3 Ultra starting price reportedly rose from $3,999 to $5,299, a $1,300 increase. These are starting prices across different generations, not proof of the cost difference between equivalent configurations. MacRumors’ June report reproduced Apple’s explanation for the broader price changes.

Apple said the consumer electronics industry faced an “unprecedented challenge,” with AI data-center expansion creating an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage. The company also said it had “never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly” and had reached a point where it needed to raise some prices, including on iPad and Mac. This gives a stated reason for pressure on Apple product pricing; it does not quantify a Mac Studio-specific cost increase or explain the full pricing strategy.
What the premium buys
Mac Studio is designed as a compact professional desktop, rather than an inexpensive general-purpose computer. Its appeal is the combination of processing capability, graphics performance, unified memory capacity, storage options and connectivity in a small system. That combination can matter to demanding video, graphics, software development, scientific and local AI workflows. It does not mean every buyer needs the most expensive configuration.

Apple’s prior-generation Mac Studio announcement described the M4 Max as a fit for video editors, colorists, developers, engineers, photographers and other creative professionals, while positioning M3 Ultra for work that can use high CPU and GPU core counts and very large unified memory. Apple cited up to 512GB of unified memory and up to 16TB SSD for that preceding generation. Those specifications illustrate the product tier’s intended range; they are not a cost breakdown or the specifications of the current M5 models. Apple’s 2025 announcement also said an M3 Ultra configuration with maximum memory could run LLMs with more than 600 billion parameters entirely in memory. That is Apple’s claim for its described configuration, not a guarantee for every model format, quantization method, software setup or practical workload.
How to choose between M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Choose based on the workload you actually run, rather than the highest specification available. The M5 Ultra is the higher tier for tasks that can take advantage of more processing resources and a larger memory pool; the M5 Max has the lower entry price and supports up to 128GB unified memory. Before paying for Ultra, check whether your software and projects benefit from its extra CPU/GPU capability, memory capacity or bandwidth.

- Workload: Identify the applications and project sizes you need to handle. Apple’s announcement cites performance comparisons in named applications including DaVinci Resolve Studio, Maxon Redshift, LM Studio, Foundry Nuke and Oxford Nanopore MinKNOW. Treat those as Apple’s results for the stated workloads and comparators, not universal speed claims.
- Memory: Large projects, high-resource compute and local AI workflows may benefit from more unified memory. Match capacity to your actual software and data needs rather than assuming that the maximum is necessary.
- Storage and peripherals: Account for internal storage requirements, displays, Thunderbolt 5 devices and external storage. Those items can affect the total cost of a complete workstation, but optional additions are not included in the starting price.
- Configured price: Compare the actual configurations you would buy, not just two entry prices. The reported generation-to-generation starting-price changes do not establish what like-for-like upgraded systems cost.
For routine office work, browsing or light creative use, the available evidence does not establish that the Ultra tier is necessary. Its premium makes most sense when a buyer’s real workload can use the additional processing and memory capacity.

Apple’s announcements explain the Mac Studio’s capabilities and intended professional uses, while its reported 2026 comments point to memory and storage cost pressure across the consumer electronics industry. Neither establishes the Mac Studio’s bill of materials, the retail-price share attributable to any component, or Apple’s margin on the product. The price increases are real reported starting-price changes, but component costs alone cannot be used to calculate why the Mac Studio sells for a particular amount.
