A failed call can come from a malformed request, the wrong app or review identifier, authentication or access problems, unavailable review data, or a quota limit; changing credentials or retrying blindly can send you in the wrong direction.
First, identify what actually failed
Record the vendor, exact endpoint, HTTP status, and response body. Keep access tokens, private keys, and other credentials out of logs and any example you share. Use the response details alongside the platform’s documented requirements: a status code narrows the investigation, but it does not always identify a unique cause.

- Request or identifier problem: Check the URL, required path parameters, query parameters, and body.
- Authentication or access problem: Check that the token is valid and that its account or API key can access the app.
- Review not returned: Confirm that the review is in the API’s documented coverage; absence from results is not necessarily a failed request.
- Rate limit: Inspect the response and current quota information before retrying. Reduce request volume or schedule work for later.
Fix Apple App Store Connect customer-review calls
Confirm the endpoint and app ID
Apple’s customer-review list endpoint is GET https://api.appstoreconnect.apple.com/v1/apps/{id}/customerReviews. The {id} must be the opaque App Store Connect app resource ID, not an assumed identifier such as the app’s name. Obtain it from the List apps response and compare it with the customer-review endpoint reference.
Use the status to choose what to inspect
Apple lists HTTP 400, 401, 403, 404, and 429 for this endpoint. These categories help direct troubleshooting, but the status alone does not establish the exact cause of an individual failure.

Handle Apple rate limits
Apple says each response includes X-Rate-Limit, which reports the hourly limit and remaining capacity for the same API key. Limits vary and operate over a rolling hour; the documented exceeded-limit response is HTTP 429 with RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED. Queue work and retry later rather than continuing to poll at the same rate. Apple’s guide illustrates 3,500 requests per hour with 500 remaining, but explicitly warns that actual limits can vary, so that example is not a universal quota. See Apple’s rate-limit guide.
Fix Google Play Reply to Reviews API calls
Check whether the API can return that review
Google’s Reply to Reviews API covers reviews for production versions of an app, and exposes only reviews that contain comments. A star rating without review text is not accessible through this API. Check alpha or beta feedback in Play Console instead. These coverage limits can explain why a review is absent even when a request succeeds. Validate a review-list request
The list method is GET https://androidpublisher.googleapis.com/androidpublisher/v3/applications/{packageName}/reviews. Use the intended app’s package name, provide the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/androidpublisher OAuth scope, and send an empty request body. If results span pages, follow pagination; use translationLanguage only as a query parameter. The reviews.list reference documents these request details.
Check OAuth credentials and Play Console access
Google Play Developer API calls use OAuth 2.0. Send the access token in the Authorization: Bearer ... header. Access tokens expire; use the refresh token to obtain a new one when needed. Confirm that the credentials belong to the intended Cloud project and that the associated account has the necessary Play Console access. Follow Google’s authorization guide.

Validate reply requests
For a reply call, verify both the package name and review ID in the path, then send JSON containing replyText. Google’s overview sets a maximum of 350 characters, while the method reference says replies longer than approximately 350 characters are rejected. Keep the reply plainly under that limit and confirm the review ID exists. Consult the reviews.reply reference for the method’s request format.
Distinguish review quotas from general quota buckets
Google documents per-app allowances of 200 review GET requests per hour and 2,000 reply POST requests per day. If request volume reaches those limits, reduce polling or reply traffic, or request a quota increase. Google also describes independent per-minute quota buckets; its general quota guide gives 3,000 queries per minute as the default for each bucket. That general default does not replace the review-specific allowances or current project quota data. A practical retry checklist
- Capture the HTTP method, endpoint, status, and response body without exposing credentials.
- Verify the platform-specific app identifier and, for a Google reply, the review ID.
- Compare method, query parameters, body, OAuth scope, token state, and account or key access with the relevant vendor documentation.
- For an empty Google result, first check review coverage and pagination rather than treating it as a transport failure.
- For a quota response, inspect Apple’s rate-limit header or Google’s applicable quota data; reduce request volume before retrying.
