1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a controller if you want the simplest way to play GT7 with equipment you may already own. Choose a supported racing wheel if physical steering and pedals are a big part of the experience you want. GT7 supports both, but the official information available does not show that either input method is universally faster. The practical choice comes down to feel, setup, space, familiarity and compatibility—not a guaranteed lap-time advantage.
How the two options differ
| Consideration | Controller | Racing wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Input style | Steering with a wireless controller’s stick or directional buttons. | Steering with a wheel and, depending on the setup, operating pedals physically. |
| Setup | A simple option if you already have a compatible controller; no wheel mount or dedicated pedal placement is needed. | Requires a GT7-supported wheel and room to position its wheel and pedals. The exact setup depends on the model. |
| Adjustments in GT7 | Polyphony Digital has adjusted wireless-controller steering behavior in game updates. | GT7 includes steering-wheel controller settings and pedal-sensitivity calibration. |
| Lap-time advantage | No head-to-head evidence in the official sources cited here establishes a universal speed or competitive advantage for either method. | |
When a controller is the better fit
- You already own a compatible controller and want to start playing without adding a separate wheel-and-pedal setup.
- You have limited room or do not want to keep hardware mounted or positioned between sessions.
- You are comfortable steering with a stick or directional buttons and prefer a familiar, straightforward setup.
Polyphony Digital’s March 30, 2023 Update 1.31 notice says the game adjusted steering behavior when players used wireless-controller sticks or directional buttons. That confirms ongoing tuning of the controller experience, not that a controller is faster or more precise than a wheel.

When a racing wheel is worth considering
- You specifically want to steer with a physical wheel and operate pedals rather than use controller inputs.
- You have enough space to place the equipment comfortably and are willing to set it up.
- You are prepared to check that the exact wheel works with your console and current GT7 version before buying.
A wheel is optional, not a requirement for playing GT7. As one example, Polyphony Digital’s Update 1.15 notes name the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro in the game’s force-feedback notes; that is evidence of a model appearing in official GT7 support information, not a recommendation or performance guarantee. Check the current compatibility information for the precise model and console generation, as well as bundle contents, stock and price, before purchase.

Check wheel compatibility and settings
Wheel support is model-specific, and official update notices show that support has changed over time. Update 1.46, published April 25, 2024, added Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Extreme support; Update 1.57, published March 27, 2025, added Thrustmaster T598 support. These dated additions do not establish compatibility for every wheel or every console configuration.

- Confirm the wheel’s exact model and the console generation you use.
- Check current GT7 and manufacturer compatibility information for that specific combination before purchase or setup.
- In GT7, open Controllers and look for Steering Controller Settings to check connected steering-wheel controllers and adjust input values.
- Use Pedal Calibration to adjust pedal sensitivity, as described in Polyphony Digital’s June 23, 2022 Update 1.17 notice.
Use force feedback carefully
Force feedback and wheel behavior have received model-specific changes. Polyphony Digital’s May 2022 Update 1.15 notice warned that very high Max. Torque or Sensitivity values could cause violent vibration on several listed wheels. A separate notice dated May 27, 2022 said force feedback and torque were temporarily reduced for the Thrustmaster T-GT, Fanatec Podium and Fanatec GT DD Pro. These are version-specific records, not current universal settings. Follow current guidance for your model and avoid assuming that a setting recommended for another wheel is safe or suitable for yours.

On July 28, 2026, Polyphony Digital announced MOZA as an official Gran Turismo World Series peripheral partner and said the companies are developing a Gran Turismo-branded steering-wheel controller with native GT7 support. The announcement gives no retail release date, so it describes a product in development—not a wheel you can assume is currently available.
