After a software update, a Pixel phone may use more battery than usual while it downloads and optimizes the new software and gets everything running. Google describes this as a temporary possibility, not a guaranteed effect or a recovery schedule for every Android phone. If unusual drain continues for a few days, check app battery use and follow the troubleshooting steps below; Android settings and menu paths vary by manufacturer and version.
Why can an update use more battery?
Installing an update does not always mean the phone has finished all of its work. Google explains that, after a software update, a Pixel can drain “a little more than usual” because it works to download and optimize the new software and get everything running. That is Google’s explanation for Pixel phones, not a measured result that applies identically to every Android model.

In practical terms, a short-lived increase in use after an update can reflect work associated with getting the new software ready. It does not, by itself, establish that the battery is damaged or that the update has permanently reduced battery life. Google does not give a percentage increase or a precise number of hours for this effect, so there is no evidence-based universal figure to compare against your phone.
Google advises seeking further help if unusual Pixel battery drain continues after a few days. Treat “a few days” as a cue to investigate ongoing unusual drain, not as a promise that every phone will return to its previous battery life on a specific day. For Android phones made by other manufacturers, Google’s general guidance emphasizes that available settings and steps can differ by device.

How to tell temporary update activity from a problem worth investigating
Start with the pattern rather than one battery reading. A phone that uses somewhat more power for a short period after updating is different from one whose battery use remains unusually high or that shows a particular app consuming a large share. The first pattern may fit Google’s Pixel update explanation; the second calls for checking which apps are using power and whether their background activity is unexpectedly high.
| What you notice | What it suggests | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A modest increase shortly after a software update | On Pixel, this can be consistent with the download and optimization work Google describes. | Observe the pattern and check battery use if it seems excessive or does not settle. |
| Drain that remains unusual after a few days on Pixel | Google’s advice is to seek further help; the timing is an escalation cue, not a guaranteed recovery deadline. | Review app battery use, follow the troubleshooting sequence, and contact support if it remains unresolved. |
| One app accounts for unexpectedly high use | The app’s battery use or background activity is a useful place to investigate. | Review its battery and background-use settings, then check for app updates. |
| Several apps appear elevated without one clear outlier | A single app is not yet identified as the cause, and device-specific behavior may be involved. | Check for app and system updates, restart, and use the manufacturer’s support guidance if the pattern persists. |
These observations do not identify every possible cause, and a single percentage or momentary reading cannot establish the cause on its own. Google’s published guidance does not rank other causes against update-related activity. Use the phone’s battery-usage screen to find a concrete lead before changing settings or assuming a hardware fault.
What “temporary” does and does not mean
Google uses qualitative language: a Pixel may drain “a little more than usual” after an update, and unusual drain that continues “after a few days” warrants further help. There is no official percentage, number of hours, or universal return-to-baseline deadline. Battery capacity, recent use, signal conditions, screen time, and the installed software can all make two phones look different, so comparing your reading with a fixed online number is not a reliable test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe timing also matters. The post-update explanation concerns the phone downloading and optimizing the new software and getting it running. Google separately notes that a newly set-up device or a phone that has undergone a factory reset may take a few weeks for battery optimization to take full effect as it learns from recent app usage. Those are different situations. Do not turn the setup or reset timeframe into a promise that an ordinary update will require weeks to settle.
What to check first: battery use by app
Look at battery use by app and note whether one app stands out. Google specifically recommends checking app battery use when troubleshooting Pixel drain. If the phone shows unusually high background battery use for an app, review the app’s background battery setting and whether it has an update available. The exact screen names and controls vary across manufacturers and Android versions, so use the battery section in your device’s Settings rather than assuming a Pixel menu path applies to your phone.

Compare apps in context: a high-use app may be one you actively used, while unexpectedly high background use is a more useful reason to inspect its settings. An app that was open for a long session can legitimately appear near the top of the list; that ranking alone does not prove a fault. Conversely, an app showing substantial background activity when you have barely used it is a reasonable lead to investigate.
Do not disable background activity indiscriminately. Controls differ by phone, and restricting an app can affect notifications or other functions. If a particular app appears to be the source, install its available update and observe whether the pattern changes before taking broader action.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pixel settings that can help manage battery use
Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled on Pixel. Adaptive Battery learns from recent app usage to help manage battery use. These settings are distinct from the temporary software-download and optimization work Google describes immediately after an update; turning them off is not a required step for the update process.
To check them, open the battery section of your Pixel’s Settings and look for Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization controls. Google’s labels and paths can change with Android versions, and other manufacturers may use different names or offer different controls. If you do not see the same wording, follow the battery guidance for your model instead of treating the difference as evidence that something is missing or broken.
Google also notes that after setting up a device or completing a factory reset, battery optimization may take a few weeks to take full effect. That timeframe applies to learning after setup or reset; it should not be presented as the expected recovery time after an ordinary software update. Keep the Pixel’s Adaptive Battery and battery optimization settings on if you want the phone to use those features.

Step-by-step troubleshooting if drain seems excessive
- Check battery use by app. Open your phone’s Settings and find the battery-usage screen. Review which apps have used battery and inspect background use where the phone provides that detail. Menu labels vary by device and Android version. On Pixel, Google includes this check in its battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.
- Keep Pixel optimization features enabled. If you have a Pixel, check that Adaptive Battery and battery optimization are on. These are Google’s recommended settings; other manufacturers may use different names or provide different options.
- Update your apps. Check the app store on your phone for available app updates, especially if the battery screen points to a particular app. Google includes app updates among its general Android troubleshooting steps. Updating the app is a focused response to an app-specific lead; it is preferable to changing every battery setting at once.
- Check for another Android system update. In Settings, use your device’s system-update screen to check whether an update is available. The precise path depends on the manufacturer and Android version; follow the instructions for your model. Do not assume that a menu path shown for one Pixel generation will be identical on another phone.
- Restart the phone. Google’s general Android battery guidance includes restarting as a troubleshooting step. Restarting is a straightforward check before moving to more disruptive actions. It also gives you a clean point from which to observe battery use again.
- Observe the pattern over a reasonable interval. Note whether the same app continues to dominate battery use, whether background use remains high, and whether the phone is still unusually warm or losing charge quickly during light use. These observations do not create an official threshold, but they make a support conversation more useful than a single screenshot.
- Use model-specific diagnostics or support if the issue persists. Pixel owners can consult Google’s battery troubleshooting page. Google documents Battery Diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold devices. If the problem remains unresolved, contact Pixel support for a Pixel or the phone manufacturer for another Android device.
Google’s general Android steps are collected in Get the most life from your Android device’s battery. Because manufacturers customize Android, the names, locations, and availability of settings are not universal.
When should you contact support?
For a Pixel, Google’s practical escalation point is unusual drain that continues after a few days. Before contacting support, record the phone model, Android version, date of the update, the apps at the top of the battery list, and whether the high use is foreground or background activity. This information can help support distinguish a general post-update pattern from an app-specific problem.
For a non-Pixel Android phone, do not apply the Pixel wording as a guarantee. Use the manufacturer’s support channel and documentation, because diagnostic tools, battery screens, and escalation criteria can differ. If the phone’s built-in battery page identifies one app, include that detail when asking the app developer or phone maker for help.
When should you consider a factory reset?
A factory reset is not a first response to a battery increase immediately after an update. Google places reset among steps for problems that do not go away, and warns that it removes phone data and apps. If you reach that point, back up the phone first and review the instructions for your model. A reset is a substantial troubleshooting step, not a way to guarantee that battery life will improve.

A reset also creates a separate setup period in which Google says optimization may take a few weeks to take full effect. That means resetting solely to chase a short-lived post-update increase can add work and uncertainty rather than provide a quick fix. Try the less disruptive checks—app battery use, app and system updates, restart, and model-specific diagnostics—before considering it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What will not fix the underlying software work?
The guidance reviewed points to settings, updates, restart, diagnostics, and support. It does not identify a charger, power bank, replacement battery, or other physical product as a remedy for the software downloading and optimization described by Google. A charger or power bank can provide power while you wait, but it does not address why the phone is using more power. A replacement battery would require a separate reason to suspect hardware failure and a phone-model-specific assessment.
What the available guidance does—and does not—establish
The clearest direct explanation is Pixel-specific: Google says a Pixel may drain a little more than usual after an update while downloading and optimizing software. Google’s general Android battery guidance covers troubleshooting, but it also makes clear that steps and settings vary by phone. It does not establish that all manufacturers’ phones behave the same way after updates.
Nor does the guidance set a universal drain percentage, a fixed number of hours, or a guaranteed return-to-normal date. On Pixel, the advice to seek help if unusual drain lasts beyond a few days is a practical threshold for action. Setup or factory-reset optimization taking a few weeks is a separate circumstance and should not be used as a post-update timetable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is extra battery drain after an Android update normal?
It can be normal on a Pixel for a short period. Google says the phone may use more battery while it downloads and optimizes the new software and gets everything running. Google does not state that every Android manufacturer’s phone behaves the same way.
Best Value
How long should I wait before asking for help?
Google advises seeking further help if unusual Pixel drain continues after a few days. That is an escalation cue, not a guaranteed date when every phone will return to its previous battery life.
What should I check first?
Open the battery-usage screen and look for an app with unusually high foreground or background use. Then check for app updates, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled on Pixel, check for a system update, and restart the phone.
Does Adaptive Battery fix post-update drain immediately?
Adaptive Battery and battery optimization are settings Google recommends keeping enabled on Pixel, but they are separate from the update’s download and optimization work. Google says optimization after setup or a factory reset may take a few weeks; that is not a promised post-update recovery schedule.
Recommended Free Tools
Do Android battery settings work the same on every phone?
No. Google says available settings and steps vary by device, manufacturer, and Android version. Use your phone’s own battery and system-update menus and the manufacturer’s support instructions.
Should I factory-reset my phone after an update?
Not as an early step. Google says a factory reset removes data and apps and places it among measures for problems that do not go away. Back up first and try app checks, updates, a restart, and model-specific diagnostics before considering a reset.
Are a new charger or power bank a solution?
They can supply power, but the guidance does not identify them as a remedy for software downloading and optimization. A replacement battery would require separate evidence of a hardware problem and an assessment for your specific model.
The Bottom Line
A Pixel can temporarily use more battery after an update while it downloads and optimizes software. Check battery use by app, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on, update apps and Android, and restart. If unusual Pixel drain continues after a few days—or if another Android phone shows persistent abnormal use—use the model-specific diagnostics and contact the appropriate support channel. There is no official universal percentage, duration, or guaranteed recovery date.
