The likely cause may be heavy screen use, an app active in the background, connectivity or location activity, or heat. Menu names and diagnostic tools vary by manufacturer and Android version, so use the Pixel paths below only on supported Pixel phones.
Find what is using the battery
Open Settings and look for Battery or Battery usage. On Pixel phones, the documented path is Settings > Battery > Battery usage; the screen can show use by app or system. Treat the largest entry as a lead, not proof of a fault: an app may rank high because you used it heavily, and system activity can also contribute. Google’s instructions are available in Pixel battery-drain troubleshooting.

On Pixel 6 and later, you can also check Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. This Pixel diagnostic is not a standard feature on every Android phone. Other manufacturers may provide different battery-usage screens or diagnostics.

Match the fix to the drain you see
If an app is using substantial background power
Open that app’s battery settings and keep Optimized selected where the option is available. Google says only some apps expose battery settings that can be changed. If an app continues to show unusually high background use, update it or consider uninstalling it. Avoid force-stopping essential services: doing so can prevent parts of the phone from working correctly, and force stop is not available for every app.

If the screen or active use is the main drain
- Lower screen brightness or shorten the screen timeout.
- Limit prolonged video playback, graphics-heavy games, camera use, and navigation when battery life matters.
- Consider Battery Saver for a temporary extension. It can limit background activity and may delay some features, network connections, or apps.
These are sensible adjustments when the usage screen or your routine points to active use; they are not evidence that the same setting is responsible on every phone. Google lists screen-on activities such as navigation, video, gaming, and extended camera use among activities to limit when conserving charge. See Google’s Android battery-conservation guidance.
If connectivity or location activity is prominent
- Turn off hotspot tethering when you have finished sharing the connection.
- When appropriate, use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data.
- Switch off Bluetooth or location when you do not need them, if you are comfortable with the effects on connected devices and location-based features.
Hotspot use, prolonged GPS, streaming, and calls while moving can involve substantial connectivity activity. Turning off a feature can also remove functionality, so make the change only when it fits how you use the phone.

Check for heat or a recent change
Is the phone unusually hot?
Pay attention if the phone is hot while idle or charging. Google Android Help warns: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use. This kind of drain can damage your battery.” Avoid conditions that overheat the phone, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance if it stays hot. Do not try to cool it with extreme temperatures.

For Pixel phones, Google says somewhat higher battery use after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If unusual drain continues after a few days, seek help. On a new or reset Pixel, Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to fully adapt. These timing notes are Pixel-specific; they should not be assumed to describe every Android device.

Where available, leave Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on. Some related Pixel instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, and options vary by model and version.

- Restart the phone. This is a low-risk first step after checking battery usage.
- Install available updates. Check Android system updates and update apps through the phone’s app store.
- Use the maker’s support route if drain continues. Pixel owners can follow Google’s battery diagnostics and support guidance. For other Android phones, contact the manufacturer or carrier; available tests, battery-health reporting, and repair eligibility depend on the model and region.
- Consider a factory reset only as a last software step. It removes data and apps. Back up your phone before resetting, and consult the manufacturer if you are unsure.
