No. A capture card cannot make a PS5 play Nintendo Switch games: the PS5’s HDMI port sends video out to a display, rather than accepting Switch video in. You can play Switch games on a TV directly, or send the Switch’s video to a computer for capture or streaming. A capture card with HDMI passthrough can also send the picture to a separate TV or monitor while you play.
Why a capture card cannot route Switch games into a PS5
A capture card receives a console’s HDMI signal and sends it to a computer for recording or streaming. Some cards also pass that signal through to a display. Neither function transfers a game to another console or turns the PS5 into an HDMI input.

Sony’s PS5 connection guidance identifies the console’s HDMI connection as HDMI OUT to a display. That output direction is why connecting a Switch or capture card to the PS5 cannot show Switch gameplay on the PS5. Choose the setup that matches what you want to do

Compatibility and passthrough features vary by capture-card model. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact card, supported resolution and refresh rate, computer compatibility, and any passthrough requirements before setting it up. Connect a Switch to a capture card and computer
This setup sends Switch video to a computer for capture or streaming. To play on a TV at the same time, use a card with HDMI passthrough and connect its output to that separate display.
- Check the Switch model. The dock-based TV connection works with Switch models that support TV mode, including Switch and Switch OLED. Nintendo says Switch Lite does not support TV mode, so it cannot use this dock-based video-output setup. See Nintendo’s TV mode guidance.
- Place the console in its dock and connect dock power. Nintendo’s TV setup specifies the console, dock, HAC-002 AC adapter, and HDMI cable. Follow the connection sequence in Nintendo’s instructions for connecting a Switch to a TV.
- Connect the dock to the capture card. Run an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI OUT to the card’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the card to the computer. Use the connection and compatible capture or streaming software specified for your card. Select the card as the video and audio source in that software.
- For TV play while capturing, add passthrough. Connect the card’s HDMI OUT to a separate TV or monitor, then select the HDMI input used by the card. The Switch runs the game; the computer captures the signal and the display shows it. The PS5 is not part of this signal path.
Fix a “no signal” problem
- Confirm TV-mode support. Switch Lite does not output through the dock. For other Switch models, seat the console in its dock.
- Check dock power and HDMI routing. Confirm the dock is powered and that the dock’s HDMI OUT goes to the capture card’s HDMI IN—not to another output port.
- Select the right input. If using passthrough, set the TV or monitor to the HDMI input connected to the card. If connecting the dock directly to a TV, select the input connected to the dock.
- Check the capture software and card requirements. Make sure the computer and software are compatible with the specific card, and verify the card supports the signal and passthrough mode you are using. A computer preview is part of the capture workflow; for playing on a separate display while capturing, use passthrough if your card supports it.
Nintendo’s TV connection instructions identify the dock, power, HDMI connection, and display input steps. Elgato’s capture-card setup guidance covers its own cards; instructions and compatibility are model-specific.

What the PS5 and Switch can capture on their own
Nintendo says built-in gameplay video capture is available from system menu version 4.0.0 and works with most software, with some titles not supporting the feature. It saves supported Switch gameplay clips; it does not route Switch video to a PS5. See Nintendo’s gameplay video capture guidance.

The PS5 also has built-in gameplay video and screenshot capture, but those features capture PS5 gameplay rather than an external Switch signal. Sony’s PS5 capture instructions explain its console capture features. Sony also notes that HDCP blocks capture cards from receiving PS5 video and advises turning HDCP off for PS5 capture; that setting concerns capturing PS5 output and does not enable Switch gameplay on the console.
