Those controls are independent, so changing one may leave the notification visible somewhere else. The fastest fix is to touch and hold the exact notification, identify its app and category, and change that specific setting.
What “off” means on Android
Android separates notification delivery, sound and vibration, screen placement, interruption filtering, and notification lifetime. A setting that changes one of these does not automatically change the others.

Android labels differ among manufacturers and versions. Google’s Android Help notes that settings vary by phone, and some instructions apply only to Android 14 and newer. Treat the paths below as a map to the relevant control, not as a universal set of labels.

Do not begin by guessing which app is responsible. The visible alert contains the most useful diagnostic information.

- Swipe down to open the notification shade.
- Touch and hold the notification.
- Open its notification settings, often through a gear icon or a Settings option.
- Note the app name and the selected notification category or type.
That screen normally lets you turn off every notification from the app or only the category that produced this alert. It also avoids disabling unrelated alerts, such as account warnings or calls, from the same app.
Disable the app or the specific category
Block everything from an app
If you want no notifications from the identified app, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications (the wording may differ), select the app, and switch off its notifications. You can often reach the same switch by long-pressing one of the app’s alerts.
Blocking the app affects all of its notification categories. It does not necessarily stop messages, syncing, or other work inside the app; it stops the app from presenting notifications through Android’s notification system.

Block one type but keep the rest
Many apps publish separate categories, such as direct messages, promotions, downloads, reminders, calls, or service status. In the app’s notification page, leave useful categories enabled and turn off only the category attached to the unwanted alert.
If the alert returns, reopen that exact notification and check its category again. A single app can use several categories with similar names, and a different event may be coming from another enabled category.

Check controls inside the app
Some preferences are owned by the app rather than Android. Sound choices, marketing alerts, digest schedules, and account-specific messages may have their own switches in the app’s settings. Android’s app-level switch cannot recreate a preference that the app itself controls, so inspect both places when an alert persists.
Silent notifications are still notifications
Choosing Silent changes interruption behavior: the phone does not play a sound or vibrate for that alert. Google describes silent notifications as remaining visible when you open the notification shade. Therefore, seeing an entry there does not prove that the disable switch failed.
Decide which result you need:
- To stop sound or vibration, set the category to silent or adjust its alert behavior.
- To remove the entry from the shade, disable the app or that category entirely.
- To keep the alert but reduce attention, leave it silent and adjust its presentation separately.
Lock-screen settings hide a surface, not the source
Android can show, hide, or limit notification details on the lock screen. This is a presentation choice. If you hide notifications on the lock screen, the same app can still post alerts in the notification shade, produce sound, or appear elsewhere according to its other settings.
Use the lock-screen option when privacy is the goal—for example, hiding message text while keeping the notification available after unlocking. Use the app or category switch when the goal is to stop delivery altogether.
Why Do Not Disturb still allows some alerts
Do Not Disturb (DND) and other Modes are interruption filters, not universal notification deletion switches. A mode can block sounds and visual interruptions while allowing selected people, apps, conversations, or event types.

Review the active mode’s filters
- Open Settings > Modes or Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb, depending on the phone.
- Open the active mode and inspect its notification, app, and people filters.
- Check whether the mode has an automatic schedule or rule that turns it on with different settings at another time.
- Remove the app, person, or conversation that should be blocked, then save the mode.
Some devices distinguish between notifications that are allowed to interrupt and notifications that remain silently visible. A notification can therefore be present in the shade even when DND prevented sound or vibration.

Critical system notifications are an exception
Google says critical notifications still show under these controls; system security notifications, for example, cannot be blocked. A security warning or other system-level alert is not governed like an ordinary app category, so turning off app notifications or enabling DND may not remove it.
Important conversations can bypass DND
On supported Pixel devices, Android’s conversation controls can mark a chat as Important. An Important conversation may still notify during DND. If one person’s messages continue to alert you, open that conversation’s notification settings and inspect its priority. Availability depends on the phone, Android version, and messaging app.
Ongoing notifications may not clear
Some notifications represent an activity that is still running rather than a one-time event. Google uses a music-player notification as an example: it may remain until playback or the related activity ends. Repeatedly swiping it away may be impossible by design.
To remove an ongoing alert, stop the underlying activity—for example, stop playback, end navigation, finish a transfer, or close the service that owns the notification. If the activity cannot be stopped, the notification may remain while that service is active.

Use notification history to identify what disappeared
On phones that provide notification history, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history. The history view can show recently dismissed or snoozed notifications and can reveal which app and category produced an alert you no longer have in the shade.
History is a diagnostic record, not a master off switch. It helps you find the source so you can change the app, category, mode, or conversation setting that actually controls delivery. The feature and its retention details vary by device.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Work through these checks in order, changing only the control that matches the symptom.
- Classify the symptom. Is the alert visible only in the shade, visible on the lock screen, making sound or vibration, or breaking through DND?
- Inspect the alert. Touch and hold it to identify the app and category, then open its settings.
- Choose the scope. Disable the individual category for a narrow fix, or disable all app notifications for a complete block.
- Check the app. Look for an internal notification switch, sound setting, promotion preference, or account-specific rule.
- Check presentation. If the problem is only the lock screen, change lock-screen notification display rather than app delivery.
- Check interruption filters. If the phone sounds during DND, inspect the active mode’s app, people, conversation, and schedule exceptions.
- Inspect conversation priority. On supported Pixel phones, remove the Important status from a conversation that is allowed through DND.
- Check lifecycle and history. Determine whether the alert is ongoing; use notification history to find dismissed or snoozed entries.
- Match the instructions to the device. If labels or options differ, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model and Android version.
Common mistakes and their precise fixes
“I made it silent, but it is still there.”
Silent controls sound and vibration, not visibility in the shade. Disable the category if you want the entry gone.
“I hid notifications from the lock screen, but they keep arriving.”
Lock-screen display affects only that surface. Change the app or category permission to stop delivery.
“I turned off one notification, but another from the same app appears.”
Reopen the new alert and inspect its category. The app may publish several independent categories.
“DND is on, yet a notification makes noise.”
Review the mode’s filters, allowed apps and people, schedules, and conversation priorities. A critical system alert may still be permitted by design.
“The notification cannot be swiped away.”
It may be an ongoing notification. End the activity that owns it instead of changing ordinary notification permissions.
“The menu in this guide does not exist.”
Android’s settings vary by manufacturer and release. Android Help also distinguishes some Android 14-and-newer behavior. Search your phone’s Settings for Notifications, Modes, or Do Not Disturb, then follow the model-specific path.
What information support needs if the problem continues
If none of these checks explains the alert, record the details before contacting the phone maker or app developer:
- Phone manufacturer and model
- Android version
- App name shown on the notification
- Notification title and category, if displayed
- Whether the alert is silent, on the lock screen, or audible during DND
- Whether the notification can be dismissed
- Which mode or schedule was active
Those details distinguish an app category problem from a mode exception, a system-critical alert, or an ongoing activity. Without the notification itself, the app, the device, and its active settings, Android does not provide one universal cause.
