When it finally happens, astronomers should detect an early burst of neutrinos and then watch the star’s expanding debris produce an evolving, exceptionally bright astronomical display. Betelgeuse is about 640 to 700 light-years away, so the sources cited here do not indicate a danger to Earth. NASA says the collapse could leave either a neutron star or a black hole, but the exact remnant cannot be known in advance.
Betelgeuse’s explosion is expected, but no countdown exists
Betelgeuse is a red supergiant about 10 million years old. Massive stars of this type eventually run out of usable nuclear fuel and collapse under their own gravity. NASA’s current public explainer places Betelgeuse’s eventual supernova at roughly another 100,000 years from now. That figure is an estimate of evolutionary timing, not a scheduled date or a precise prediction.

The distinction matters because Betelgeuse has changed brightness dramatically in the recent past without exploding. During the Great Dimming in late 2019 and early 2020, its apparent brightness fell by about 60% over several months. NASA says the star returned to its normal brightness by April 2020. The explanation was a surface mass ejection followed by a cloud of dust that blocked some of the star’s light. The dimming was not evidence that the supernova was imminent.

What would happen during the supernova?
1. The core would collapse
At the end of the star’s life, its core would collapse in a fraction of a second. The collapse launches a shock through the star’s outer layers and converts the star into a supernova: a rapidly changing event in which stellar material is expelled into space. The exact details depend on how much mass Betelgeuse still has when the collapse begins, which is one reason its final appearance and remnant cannot be forecast precisely today.

2. Neutrinos would arrive as an early signal
Neutrinos are nearly massless particles that pass through ordinary matter far more easily than light does. In a core-collapse event, they can escape from the collapsing interior before the expanding outer layers become visible. Detectors on Earth would therefore receive an important warning in neutrinos, followed by the rise of electromagnetic light as the explosion develops.
The 1987 supernova known as SN 1987A demonstrated why neutrinos matter. Its neutrino detection gave astronomers strong evidence that a compact object formed in the collapse, even though later observations had not directly established whether that object was a neutron star or a black hole.
3. Expanding debris would produce an evolving light show
The expelled layers would expand into space and become progressively different as they cooled, collided and interacted with material that Betelgeuse had shed earlier. The light would not be a single unchanging flash. Its spectrum and brightness would evolve as different layers of gas became visible and as the blast wave encountered its surroundings.
There is no authoritative Betelgeuse-specific calculation in the cited sources that fixes the eventual apparent magnitude, a guaranteed period of naked-eye visibility or whether it would be visible in daylight. Those details should be treated as unresolved forecasts rather than facts.

SN 1987A shows the kind of sequence astronomers could observe
SN 1987A is the best real-world guide in the available evidence, but it was a different star in a different environment. NASA’s historical account records that SN 1987A increased in brightness by a factor of 100 during the three and a half years after its discovery. Its outer ejecta expanded at approximately 2,000 to 30,000 kilometers per second. The event occurred about 170,000 light-years away.
ESA’s account describes an initial burst of light illuminating rings of gas around the exploded star. Later, the fast-moving shell of expelled material struck the central ring, heating the gas and producing X-rays. This is a documented feature of SN 1987A’s surroundings, not a prediction that Betelgeuse has the same ring structure. Betelgeuse’s own circumstellar environment would determine what later interactions look like.
| Observed or estimated property | Betelgeuse | SN 1987A |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | About 700 light-years (NASA); 640 light-years (ESO) | Approximately 170,000 light-years (NASA historical account) |
| Timing | Supernova unlikely for about another 100,000 years, according to NASA | Observed event discovered in 1987 |
| Brightness history | Great Dimming reduced apparent brightness by about 60% in 2019–2020; NASA says normal brightness returned by April 2020 | Brightness increased by a factor of 100 during the three and a half years after discovery |
| Ejecta speed | Not stated in the cited Betelgeuse source | Approximately 2,000–30,000 km/s for the outer ejecta, according to NASA |
| Later interaction | Not stated in the cited Betelgeuse sources | ESA observed the expanding shell striking a central ring, heating gas and generating X-rays |
How bright would Betelgeuse look from Earth?
It would be a major event for professional astronomers and skywatchers because Betelgeuse is hundreds, rather than hundreds of thousands, of light-years away. However, the cited NASA and ESO material does not provide a current, Betelgeuse-specific light curve. That means responsible coverage cannot promise a particular apparent magnitude, a fixed number of visible weeks or months, or daylight visibility.

The event would also be seen after the light had crossed the distance between Betelgeuse and Earth. NASA gives an approximate distance of 700 light-years, while ESO gives 640 light-years. These values differ modestly because they are source-attributed estimates; neither should be presented as a perfectly exact distance.

Observers would likely see the object change over time rather than remain static. Astronomers would measure its spectrum, follow the expanding debris and compare the changing light with neutrino detections and other signals. The precise naked-eye experience, including how bright it becomes from a particular location and how long it remains prominent, is not established by the cited sources.
Would the explosion harm Earth?
No danger to Earth is supported by the cited sources. ESO’s educational explanation says that a supernova within about 25 light-years would probably strip Earth’s atmosphere and kill all life. That is an approximate educational threshold, not a sharp universal boundary for every possible supernova. ESO places Betelgeuse about 640 light-years away, and NASA gives about 700 light-years.
Under either estimate, Betelgeuse is vastly farther away than ESO’s approximate danger distance. The supernova would still send radiation and particles across space, and scientists would study those signals carefully, but the available evidence does not indicate that the event would destroy Earth or make it uninhabitable.

A neutron star is one possibility
A neutron star is the extremely dense collapsed core left when the remaining mass is not enough to force continued collapse into a black hole. NASA lists a neutron star as one possible outcome for Betelgeuse.

A black hole is the other listed possibility
If enough material remains around the collapsing core, the remnant could instead become a black hole. NASA says the deciding factor is how much material remains after the collapse. Because Betelgeuse’s final mass and the details of its collapse cannot be known in advance, neither remnant can be identified confidently today.
SN 1987A illustrates the limits of early certainty. Neutrinos provided strong evidence that a compact object formed, but NASA’s 2017 feature, updated in 2025, reported that no telescope had yet found direct evidence establishing whether that remnant was a neutron star or a black hole. A similar ambiguity could initially apply to Betelgeuse.

A nearby core-collapse supernova would let astronomers connect several kinds of evidence: neutrinos from the collapsing interior, changing light from the explosion, spectra revealing the chemical composition of the ejecta, and later X-rays or other emissions from shocks in surrounding gas. Because Betelgeuse is much closer than SN 1987A, instruments could examine its evolution in exceptional detail, although the exact observations would depend on the explosion and the material around the star.

Robert Kirshner, identified by NASA as a Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics astronomer and a science program officer at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, said: “The 30 years’ worth of observations of SN 1987A are important because they provide insight into the last stages of stellar evolution.” That statement concerns the scientific value of studying SN 1987A; it is not a timetable or brightness prediction for Betelgeuse.

What the Great Dimming does—and does not—tell us
The 2019–2020 dimming is useful evidence about Betelgeuse’s unstable surface, not a warning that its core is about to collapse. NASA attributes the episode to material expelled from the surface and a dust cloud that temporarily blocked part of the star’s light. The star’s return to normal brightness by April 2020 is consistent with a temporary obscuration event.
Surface eruptions and dust production can occur during a red supergiant’s life without triggering the final core-collapse process. Therefore, the dimming cannot be converted into a countdown. NASA’s roughly 100,000-year estimate remains an approximate evolutionary expectation, and no cited source supplies an exact date.
What is known versus what remains uncertain
| Question | What the cited sources establish | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Will Betelgeuse eventually explode? | NASA expects the red supergiant eventually to undergo a supernova. | An exact calendar date |
| When? | NASA says it is unlikely for about another 100,000 years. | A precise countdown or prediction that the event is imminent |
| How far away? | NASA gives about 700 light-years; ESO gives 640 light-years. | A single perfectly exact value agreed by all sources |
| Will Earth be safe? | Both cited distances are far beyond ESO’s approximate 25-light-year danger comparison. | A sharp universal hazard boundary for every supernova type |
| How bright will it be? | It would be a major astronomical event and its light would evolve. | A reliable apparent magnitude, daylight-visibility claim or fixed duration |
| What remnant will form? | NASA lists a neutron star or black hole. | Which of those two outcomes will occur |
How astronomers and the public would follow it
Professional observatories would coordinate measurements across the electromagnetic spectrum, while neutrino detectors would look for the early signal from the core collapse. Follow-up observations would track the expanding ejecta, identify newly formed elements and test how the blast interacts with surrounding gas.
NASA describes Betelgeuse as accessible to backyard observers under ordinary conditions, so a future supernova would attract worldwide attention from unaided-eye observers and amateur astronomers alike. The available sources do not establish that special equipment would be essential, nor do they support a specific observing schedule or guaranteed visual appearance.
Bottom line
Betelgeuse is expected to explode, but NASA’s best public estimate places that event roughly 100,000 years away, not in the near future. The explosion would begin with core collapse and neutrinos, followed by an evolving display of expanding stellar debris. At a distance of about 640 to 700 light-years, it is far outside ESO’s approximate 25-light-year range for catastrophic atmospheric effects, so the cited evidence does not indicate a threat to Earth. The final compact object could be a neutron star or a black hole, and the exact brightness, duration and appearance remain impossible to specify confidently from current evidence.
