Android hotspot settings vary because the experience depends on three things: the Android version and phone maker’s software, the device’s hotspot hardware and capabilities, and the carrier’s rules for your plan and account. Android has a shared tethering framework, but that does not mean every phone shows the same controls—or that every plan permits mobile-data tethering.
Why hotspot settings differ between Android phones
Android’s tethering framework supports sharing a phone’s mobile data with another device. Most Android phones can share by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, but the exact options and menu labels depend on the device and software. Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 14 or newer, and that steps can vary by device and manufacturer. Google’s Android tethering help is general guidance, not a universal menu map.

The Android version and manufacturer’s software
Phone makers build the Settings app and integrate it with Android’s framework. A setting may be renamed, moved, or unavailable in a particular software build. Search Settings for “hotspot” or “tethering,” then consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and Android version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe phone’s capabilities
Android’s open-source platform documentation describes Wi-Fi hotspot controls such as network name, security, hidden network status, operating band and channel, client limits, automatic shutdown, and management of connected devices. These are possible Soft AP settings, not a promise that every phone exposes them. Available controls depend on device capabilities, and manufacturers provide the settings app, framework integration, and hardware or firmware support. AOSP’s Wi-Fi Soft AP documentation explains this device-dependent layer.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Why the carrier can affect hotspot access
A carrier can set rules for whether mobile-data tethering is supported on a line, and some carriers limit tethering or charge extra. Google advises customers to check with their carrier. Carrier and plan terms can therefore matter even when a phone has hotspot hardware and displays a hotspot switch.
Android includes a carrier-configuration flag, KEY_CARRIER_SUPPORTS_TETHERING_BOOL, for whether a carrier supports mobile-data tethering. Carrier-specific values can come from a carrier app, a platform configuration app, or framework defaults. The Android tethering implementation can also perform a provisioning or entitlement check when configuration calls for it. See CarrierConfigManager, AOSP carrier configuration, and the AOSP tethering entitlement implementation.

Those platform mechanisms explain how carrier rules can be applied; they do not identify the policy for a particular carrier, country, plan, or account. A missing control alone cannot tell you whether the cause is the menu, the phone’s capabilities, or carrier support.
What to check when hotspot is missing or will not turn on
- Find the relevant setting. Open Settings and search for “hotspot” or “tethering.” If it is not there, check the phone maker’s instructions for your exact model and Android version; a menu path from another phone may not apply.
- Verify mobile data and plan eligibility. Confirm mobile data works, then ask your carrier whether your plan and account allow hotspot use, whether limits apply, and whether charges may apply.
- Ask whether tethering is provisioned. If the hotspot option appears but will not activate, ask the carrier to check tethering eligibility or provisioning for the line. An entitlement check is one possible explanation, not proof of the cause.
- Consider another supported connection method. Google documents Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering. Check that both the phone and the device receiving the connection support the method. Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers; a USB connection also requires a compatible data-capable cable.
- Check compatibility if a device cannot see the hotspot. If your phone exposes band or security settings, compare them with what the connecting device supports. Not every phone offers those controls, and changing a Wi-Fi setting will not remove a carrier restriction.
Choosing between Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering
| Method | What to check | Relevant limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Both devices must support the available hotspot settings, including any band or security options the phone exposes. | Phone controls vary; carrier plan permission still applies. |
| Bluetooth | Both devices must support Bluetooth tethering. | Availability depends on the phone and the receiving device. |
| USB | Both devices must support USB tethering, and the cable must carry data and fit the devices. | Google says Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers. A cable does not bypass carrier restrictions. |
Choose based on carrier permission, phone support, the other device’s connection options, and whether a wireless or wired link suits your situation. Google’s help page says a Wi-Fi hotspot can share with up to 10 other devices; that is its documented limit, not a guarantee that every phone or carrier supports that many connections.
